Mexico uses the .mx domain when targeting its home country.
I spent the last 4 days in Playa del Carmen, Mexico at an entrepreneur retreat. As always, domains were on top of my mind. Especially when I got a call Thursday morning from Moniker about the Oversee acquisition. Unfortunately, internet access was sparse and I wasn’t able to write about it.
Like many countries, Mexico uses familiar domain extensions as sub domains of its country code, .mx. Mexican domain names are typically domain.com.mx. Many businesses in Mexico use .com.mx, but a number also rely on simply .com. My observation is that companies that serve only their country typically use .com.mx. Companies that have international operations or cater to people outside the country, such as hotels, usually stick with .com.
For example, here’s a photo of the domain for Hotel Cohiba at www.hotelcohibaplaya.com.
Of course, many people forget the .mx at the end of Mexican domains, sending a large amount of typo traffic to owners of corresponding .com domains.
Few registrars offer .com.mx domains. Network Solutions charges $95 per year with a 2 year minimum for .com.mx registration.

Internet use in Mexico is still not up to par with the US and certain Western European Countries and Asian countries. Once that changes though, for example when the majority of the country is wired for broadband access and more schools and institutions are required to provide computer/internet access to everyone, that will change… when? who knows, but when it does generic .com..mx ccTLDs will have their day in the sun! Registering and maintaining Mexican ccTLDs is expensive but should drop as more people register and use them in the future.
Andale, andale! Here’s to giving Mexican citizens easier access and resources to the WWW!
