NamePros takes over top spot for domain forums.
In a major reversal to last year’s survey, NamePros has come out on top in the 2007 Domain Name Wire survey for best domain name forum. NamePros received 55% of the vote compared to only 12% last year. DNForum, on the other hand, dropped from 43% to 35%.
NamePros’ popularity shows in its user statistics. As I write there are 1,078 people discussing domain names at NamePros in thousands of threads. DNForum is hopping as well with 1,295 visitors.
DNForum is trying to clean up its image. The forum banned posting trademark domains for sale and has started to use a points system to remove members who seem to visit only to pick fights. DNForum has strong leadership from domain investor Adam Dicker.
Many domainers rave about the help they are able to give and receive at NamePros. In general, it’s good to have a couple major domain forums. It leads to innovation and allows people of different skill levels to participate.
No link to NamePros? Why?
DNforum link goes to membership fee sign up page. Perhaps an affiliate link. No charge at namepros so no affiliate program.
Anyway, this survey is right on the money if you ask me.
Martin, I use a java script program that automatically converts certain text into links. That way I don’t have to add link tags to every site when I write about it. I had not added NamePros to the system, which was an oversight. Thanks for pointing that out.
I think the numbers don’t tell the true story. Dnforum is more exclusive and caters to a more “upscale” domaining clientels where as NamePros is more so for the general public. Nontheless, each forum is effective in its own rights and as you said, it is good to have a couple major domain forums.
James, I don’t use NamePros enough to critique it versus DNForum. I use DNForum 99% of the time and am quite happy with it. Adam Dicker is making some changes that should make it even better going forward. I don’t think anyone in this industry would hesitate to say that both forums are good.
“Adam Dicker is making some changes that should make it even better going forward”
Interesting that that is exactly what Adam said almost 2 years ago… and DNF has deteriorated.
I’m not a fan of either of the 2 forums. Both have need to rein in their mods and try alot harder to deal with scams.
Neither can handle difference of opinion very well.
Lord help you if your on either of those forums and say anything positive about the another forum…. instant ban.
A forum deciding to be judge, jury and advocate in order to SELF IMPOSE TM’s is just BS.
Of course those are PRIVATE forums, thus they are entitled to operate them as they choose BUT that does not make vigilantism proper.
would be awful funny if “THEIR” hosting and even ISP decided to kill their accounts under a guise of “sponsering” TM violation by some domain being bought or sold on their forum and it has some unknown TM.
There is a reason the public isn’t allowed to decide and enforce matters of law.
All the more reason OTHERs should try to establish more domain related forums and LEGITIMATE domainers orgs.
I posted the link at dnforum and it was immediatley deleted. A simple link left open for discussion. This is just one reason why namepros is tops. Namepros leaves topics regarding dnforum on their forums and the mods watch them. As long as the conversations stay on focus people are allowed to express their opinions. Dnforum will not allow anything at all to be posted about namepros. They even had it not long ago if you typed “namepros” it would come out as ********
I myself am tired of having threads, sales posts deleted at dnforum for no reason and have visited there for the last time.
Namepros rules period! Good for ya’s, you deserve it.
There is the same figths at DNF and NP.
The only difference is NP is better moderated.
If Adam does not decide to be more present and ban some moderators then I don’t think anything will change.
I have been using both sites for over a year, and I too have seen DNForum go downhill. Adam may own some great domains but I am not impressed with him. Too many members feel he is just out for himself- charging ridiculous prices for stuff in the forum. He posts his phone number then never gets back to anyone- he hates confrontation. All of managment, including the mods, are not interested in righting the wrongs.
He thrives on “Adams Army” (those members who think everything Adam touches is golden, no matter what) and ignores posts from those who are not part of that army. You see it every day- questions that go not addressed.
Alot of people are starting to get tired of it. DnForum is not some elite group as they are made out to be- its just another forum that charges an enourmous amoutn of money ust to go into an area to talk about trademarks, when we talk about that in the other areas anyways.
The “changes”- well, he still has a long way to go because what he IS doing isnt making things any better. It’s sad- I really liked it there at one point. ;-(
Yes Puhleeze,
There is a false buzz that says NP is only visited by newbies and DNF mainly by industry’s big boys.
In fact a significant share of domainers use to browse both forums.
Regarding industry big boys, they simply rarely/never post nor discuss so even if they visit DNF the interest for the community is null.
Hmm…interesting survey. I didn’t get to vote but I certainly would have for Namepros. IMHO it’s just nice having a forums where discussion is open. I don’t have anything negative to say about Adam. I have met him and personally he seems like a great guy. However I do have issue with some site policies and how he runs DNF. They are obvious problems as some have already pointed out. I also don’t believe DNF will do better in the next years poll. It will imho continue to decline as long as Adam runs it how he does.
I am just happy to be a Namepros member and part of a growing community. At DNF it doesn’t have that “community” feel.
I’m surprised DomainState.com isn’t mentioned. It has a lot of resources for new domainers, but is also home to a number of successful domain veterans.
I have to say I am not surprised by the poll. I have been a member of both for a very long time. NamePros is just an all around great place to be.
i am sure adam is nice in person- and even tho namepros did well this year, they have their issues.
what gets me is that these are forums- not the national vault, not the oval room- internet forums… and the owners and mods act like they have the cure for cancer in their grips, and life could not go one with out the majesties. makes me laugh sometimes watching them get all puffed up, over someone who got thier undies in a bunch-
they are a great resource, but have NO idea what is talked about off the forums about them- and that my friend is the worst- the silent departer- before you know it, you are alone and have no idea why-
hense dnforum dropping.
