Registration prices and security of domains are the top factors when choosing a domain registrar, according to the 2007 Domain Name Wire survey.
If registrars want to earn your business, they need to offer low prices and ensure the safety of your domain names. For the second year in a row, price and security came out on top when domain owners were asked to rank the importance of various factors for choosing a domain registrar.
Survey respondents were asked to rank six factors in order of importance. The factors were presented in random order to each respondent to avoid bias.
The weighted average results were:
1. Price
2. Security
3. Customer service
4. Account management tools
5. Ease of transfering domains to other people
6. Value added services, such as webhosting
Although price came out on top, security received the most votes as being “most important”, with 37% of the vote. (Price received 35%.) It may seem odd that customer service is in the middle of the list, but when you consider the thought process of selecting a registrar it makes sense:
“First, make sure their price is reasonable. Cross off any companies over $x per registration even if they have great customer service. Second, make sure my domains won’t be stolen or lost. Even though RegisterFly was cheap, your domains certainly weren’t secure there. Once a registrar meets those two qualifications then consider their customer service.”
In other words, you have to have great customer service to be a good registrar, but if your pricing and security are bad then it’s a moot point.
