This week has been marked on the domain name industry’s calendar for quite some time. Anticipation is growing for 2 different and unique domain name conferences kicking off later this week.
In Seattle, the Domain Name Roundtable runs May 25 to May 27. This event is put on by the folks at Name Intelligence, one of the most popular domain name research companies. You may know Name Intelligence for its popular WhoIs.sc site. The Domain Name Roundtable looks to be an ICANN meeting on steroids, but certainly focused on industry issues and not necessarily on traffic monetization. Key representatives from powerhouse players like Network Solutions and GoDaddy will be on panels. It’s great to see a conference show not put on for profit, as all proceeds will benefit Tsunami victims. Since it’s not for profit, there are no issues with speakers buying their spots by sponsoring.
Over in Las Vegas, T.R.A.F.F.I.C. West starts on May 24 and runs through May 27. A follow-up to the successful T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference in Florida last year, this conference will focus on domain name hijacking. T.R.A.F.F.I.C. has an obvious tilt toward domain name monetization and aftermarket sales in both its attendees and sponsors. T.R.A.F.F.I.C. West was announced after the Domain Name Roundtable, which has created backlash in the domain name community. It’s sad that an industry that can handle multiple tradeshows has to have overlapping ones. Nevertheless, this show will attract heavyweights in the industry.
All signs point to the growing importance of the domain name industry, and having two industry conferences this week is a case in point.
