ICANN, Afilias and other companies will have representatives at SXSW in Austin this March.
SXSW is right around the corner, with the popular Interactive portion taking place March 10-16 in Austin.
Unlike previous years, I haven’t found any domain name-specific sessions. But there are two sessions that have a domain name angle, or at least some familiar faces. (Let me know if I missed any. Also, let me know if your domain name company is doing any marketing or holding events during SXSW.)
Internet Kill Switch? Who’s Got the Keys?
March 10, 2017 – 11:00am to 12:00 pm – JW Marriott Salon AB
Christopher Mondini, VP at ICANN
Ram Mohan, Exec VP & Chief Technology Officer at Afilias
Christian Dawson, Co-Founder & Exec Dir of i2Coalition
Shane Tews, Visiting Fellow at American Enterprise Institute (and previously with Versigin)
Description: Are you online right now? Maybe you’re on your phone, tablet, or laptop. Maybe you’re even reading messages on your watch! The seamless access to everything on the Internet is akin to the air we breathe. We don’t give it a second thought. Type in a URL and BOOM! You order a product from Nepal. From connecting doctors with patients for better health care to kick-starting the next charitable organization, the Internet can be a tool for tremendous global good. But it can also be a tool for criminal activity. Who keeps a watchful eye over the Internet globally? Is there such a thing as an INTERNET KILL SWITCH? Is the backbone of the Internet safe against attack?
Sex Tech and Law: Virtual Reality to Revenge Porn
March 16, 2017 – 12:30pm to 1:30pm – Austin Convention Center Room 9BC
Enrico Schaefer, Traverse Legal PLC
Daliah Saper, Saper Law
(Both Enrico and Daliah also work on domain name issues and frequently attend domain name conferences.)
Description: Like all online, content driven, companies, pornography businesses have had to adapt their business models in order to combat internet piracy, limit liability associated with user generated content, and remain in compliance with state and federal statutes. This session will highlight new pornography platforms and their respective methods of digital distribution. It will also cover software and other technology used to enforce pornography businesses’ intellectual property rights. A portion of the presentation will be devoted to the “business” of Revenge Porn.
