Whale butchering and domain names do not mix. Or do they?
What do the Faroe Islands and whales have to do with domain names? Let me explain.
You can learn about the Faroe Islands, which relies on tourism for much of its economy, at VisitFaroeIslands.com. Slip a “the” into the address to make it VisitTheFaroeIslands.com and you’ll land on a gruesome site about whale butchering around the islands:
The tourism board that runs the first site filed a UDRP against the exposé site. Unsurprisingly, it lost the UDRP because the panel determined that site owner was making a legitimate non-commercial use of the domain name.
The post about this UDRP on Domain Name Wire was shared nearly 4,000 times on Facebook, generating lots of traffic and landing the post at #3 for the year.
