Charts in ICANN report reveal interesting trends.
ICANN published the beta (pdf) of its gTLD Marketplace Health Index today. Here are some graphs I found interesting.
These graphs only refer to gTLDs, not ccTLDs.
Growth in second level domain additions was slipping until new top level domains were released:
Geographic top level domains are more popular than IDNs, at least in terms of registration volume:
Domain owners are losing fewer cybersquatting arbitration cases than they used to. Not only is the number down compared to 2012-2013, but 2014-2015 include the new URS cases!
Here’s the percentage of time the domain name owner loses a cybersquatting arbitration case. (Keep in mind the latter two years include URS cases.)

Interesting. I was able to show a 6-year decline in the number of UDRPs filed against legacy gTLDs like .COM.
And this ICANN study says that cybersquatting claims in UDRP and URS cases are also more likely to be denied.
Domain Registration Singapore says
This is an interesting update especially to those who are domain owners, well-known companies and businesses with registered domains.

Even with URS cases in mind, it appears the industry is gearing up against cyber-squatting more and more. It’s actually a relief to see that there is some form of regulated policing happening in the industry to help keep everyone safe. Too much regulation would probably be bad, however I think we all know that some is definitely needed.
