Billings surge in Q4.
New top level domain name company Minds + Machines has released some of its Q4 and full year 2015 results ahead of the publication of full results in April.
The company generated $4.18 million in billings for domain name registrations in Q4, with $1.52 million of this from premium domain names. These numbers are up significantly from Q3, which had total billings of $1.42 million.
Total billings for 2015 hit $7.92 million.
Billings are different from revenue because revenue is recognized over the life of the registration term.
Minds + Machines had 278,523 domain names registered across its TLDs at the end of the year.
The company plans to launch up to 5 new domain names in 2016.
It’s also betting on robust growth after its official entry into China this year.
It will be interesting to see what effect China will have on Minds + Machines. The company doesn’t have the very generic domains that tend to do well there. Also, people in China have already registered millions of domains from other companies that aren’t officially in China yet, such as .xyz and .club — they just can’t use them until these companies get the blessing of the Chinese government. They haven’t done the same with Minds + Machines’ domains.
The future release of .VIP has potential in the Chinese market, but it might need to be priced in the sub $2-$3 range to gain traction there.
