A story about Taylor Swift goes viral.
Taylor Swift had some Bad Blood with a guy who claims he taught her how to play the guitar. A resulting story on Domain Name Wire went viral, coming in at the #2 most-read story on the site last year.
The backstory: T Swift’s former guitar teacher registered the domain name ITaughtTaylorSwift.com. Swift’s management company didn’t like this and threatened him.
When I heard about the issue with the guitar teacher, I did a couple of searches on Verisign’s DomainView to see if anyone registered related domain names.
Indeed, I came across an X-rated one: itaughttaylorswifthowtogivehead.com
I assumed some prankster was playing around after the guitar teacher story went mainstream. But when I looked at the whois record, I found that this unsavory domain was registered at brand protection registrar MarkMonitor. In other words, Swifts own management company owned the domain name!
Seems like an odd domain to defensively register, doesn’t it?
John Berryhill says
It’s probably a standard string they use.
They did the same thing for Justin Bieber.
