A weekly roundup of expired domain name sales.
59 bidders saw a golden opportunity when JinSe.com expired, yet it was the enthusiasm of just 2 of them that lifted it above $10.1k to finish 3 times higher at $30.2k. That made this piece of Chinese Pinyin NameJet’s top expired domain auction during the past week. Oh, in case you haven’t guessed already, jīn sè (金色) = “golden”. It also happens to be the name of a Korean actress.
Think about this … Had 1 out of the 2 high bidders been away from his computer – traveling, asleep, in a meeting, on a date – then we might be looking at $10.1k instead of $30.2k. Likewise, if either had recently spent a large part of his budget elsewhere, the final price might be very different even though their valuations would be unchanged. Alternatively, some third person who didn’t show up might have driven the bids still higher.
Those of you who appraise domains by referencing auctions will want to keep in mind that prices fluctuate by a factor of 3 or more due to the presence or absence of a single bidder. If that’s true both upward and downward, then that can mean a 3^2 = 9-fold spread, which is effectively a full digit of price uncertainty! And this is due primarily to chance, not value.

No, the 2nd highest sale isn’t chǐ pǐn (侈品?). Your English-reading eyes do not deceive you; it’s ChipIn.com ($12.1k), meaning to lend a hand by contributing money. That said, you’ll have to switch to Spanish (or possibly Italian) to read LaCasa.com ($6.3k) as “the house”. There! Between those 3 domain sales, the world’s 3 most populous languages are represented – although, to be fair, English and Spanish would need to swap places.
At first, I saw Luann.com ($3.9k) as a Vietnamese male name, since I’ve known a Luan or 2; but it may be a compound woman’s name: Lu Ann. There’s even a newspaper comic strip by that title that dates back to 1985. XiaoMaomi.com ($1.7k) looks to be the name of a Thai model, although it may have other applications. As for Michelsen, it’s a surname used by “Iceland’s oldest watch company“.

TheWindyCity.com ($1.3k) is none other than Chicago, “hog butcher to the world”. Truthfully, I didn’t recognize OnFleek.com ($1.0k) as English at all, but this article tells me the slang phrase went viral in 2014, thanks to Vine. “Eyebrows on fleek” means they’re perfectly groomed. Guess that gauges how “with it” I’m not. That and selfie sticks, which I discovered only by writing about the .COM auction.
32366.com was reported sold last week for $454, yet it appears to have been re-auctioned 7 days later for $2.5k. Not sure why. After another numeric at $2.1k, there’s a notable .CC sale: CCDD.cc ($1.8k) would be valued higher than most LLLL.cc domains because its repeating letters also repeat the TLD. Repetition and lucky “8”s caused the 7-digit 8897888.com ($1.5k) to outperform a few 6-digit numerics ($1.0k, $530, $170, $133, $114) as well as a 5-digit .COM ($891). Meanwhile, other 7-digit numerics – including another with 5 numeral “8”s – sold as low as $165.

CashCoach.com ($915) is a great name for money management. And CourtData.com ($705) must be useful for lawyers. One of my favorites, MakeAShirt.com ($751) is a straightforward call-to-action brand name with real mass appeal. Shirts ship easily, making them perfect for e-commerce; and who wouldn’t want to design a custom T-shirt?
French free games are LesJeuxGratuits.com ($640). In France as a .FR, Semeco.com ($580) stands for the “societé d’économie mixte équipements collectifs”. But in Saudi Arabia as SEMECOMEP.com, SEMECO means the “Specialized Electro-Mechanical Energy Company”. It’s also a surname of an Olympic swimmer and others with ties to Venezuela.
Interested in numerical domains with LL prefixes? “HG” had 3 .COMs ($1.6k, $691, $654) as did “JS” ($784, $576, $520). But “HG” spilled over to .ORG with another pair just under $700 each: HG66.org & HG55.org. .NET is represented with an LLL at $1.2k and ann NNNN at $410.

While I do agree that CatDestroysHomes.org ($350), isn’t a charity for traumatized cat owners OddlySpecific.com ($343)? Terrabon.com ($310) I enjoy for its “good earth” associations. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if this expiration is related to the 2012 bankruptcy of a certain “biofuels pioneer”. Plenty of companies would like to GainShare.com ($449); not all do.

WorldApart.com ($232) reminds me of an anti-Apartheid movie starring Barbara Hershey; but that was 1988, which is itself a world apart from our online culture. Notice the lone nTLD in the list above? That’d be Barbecue.Club at $231. If you’re wondering about the current wholesale value of .INFO, try Gloves.info ($198) on for size.

Perhaps some women want a SafeNest.com ($161), while some males want their very own man cave. MiCueva.com ($160) is “my cave” in Spanish. Alright, folks, how much would you have paid for Podiatry.com? Mucho. And yet we let Podologia.com (Spanish for “podiatry”) slip by at only $175! Ludicrous.
CodeTeacher.com ($160) will make an excellent brand name for programming tutorials. TheTransformer.com ($169), if it isn’t bound for Hollywood or electrical systems, would be a great online address for a life coach, dietician, or business turnaround expert.
The only thing I can tell you about Aomoring.net ($170) at this point is that the .COM is a Japanese website about seafood. You tell me! And while you’re at it, who’s the genius who proposed FGI-TBFF.org ($160) as a website name; and what’s a TiffNexus.net ($157)?

If I say that BeachBash.com ($120) is a great brand name, do you think they’ll invite me? At just $137, RainbowWedding.com sold astonishingly cheap. This isn’t just any keyword; it’s a symbol of LGBT pride.
There are a MillionWays.com ($759) to spend tomorrow. For example, you might meditate while listening to 10 hours of continuous Tibetan SingingBowls.com ($751). Coincidentally, TibetWrites.org sold for $114. Seeing TheBoxTV.com ($140) reminds me that Box.TV reportedly sold for £9,999 last week at Sedo.
Retail prices for domain names today max out around $10 million, give or take; and prospective buyers still gasp at my 4-figure price quotes. Yet, to put the domain market in perspective, let’s compare Luvaglio.com ($175) with this description of what Luvaglio sells:
Luvaglio is a British computer company entering the luxury devices market. The boutique claims to be developing a notebook computer of handmade shell, with a guide price of $1 million.
