Take a trip back in time in the domain name business.
Domain Name Wire is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and I thought it would be fun to take a look back at what I was writing about ten years ago this month.
In looking back at the June 2005 archives, I realize I wrote some pretty crappy stories back then. But there was a lot of interesting stuff going on, and it’s amusing to take a trip back in time…
.Com and .Net domain names totaled 76.9 million names as of the end of Q1 2005, as Verisign reported in June of 2005. Compare that to Q1 2015, when 133 million names were registered. Funny thing is, back then everyone said all the good domain names were taken in .com. Yet another 40-50 million have been registered.
Adam Dicker successfully defended his domain name Elephant.com in a UDRP. A couple years later he also saved Pig.com in a UDRP.
The domain name appraisal scam was alive and well in 2005.
Sedo brokered the sale of TextMessage.com for $35,000. In retrospect, that was a great deal.
I also wrote about how the .xxx domain name extension was “ready for lift-off“. I was only off by about 6 years.
