Joseph Peterson reviews the past week of expired domain name sales at NameJet.
China and the USA take turns as king of the mountain. Last week, an English domain was perched on top of our pile of expired NameJet auctions. This week China occupies both the #1 and #3 positions with PQA.com ($17.1k) and 058.net ($5k) respectively, while #2 currently remains indeterminate. METE.com ($12.3k) can be regarded as an English word, a verb meaning to measure and dispense some allotment. Yet it’s so archaic that its usage has dwindled almost to a single vestigial phrase – when a judge “metes out punishment”. So I’d be surprised if that English meaning has anything to do with the $12.3k high bid.
Hamish.com ($3.3k) is a Scottish first name, while Montgomery.org ($3k) is both a surname and the capital of Alabama. Some DNW readers whose first language isn’t English may look askance at BreadWinner.com ($3.2k). Taken literally, it looks like a first-place loaf in a baking contest. Actually, a breadwinner is the person whose earnings support a family household. He or she “earns the dough” and “brings home the bacon”. Yet I wouldn’t be surprised if this old metaphor is taken as a pun and the domain used by some local bakery, returning that phrase to its literal meaning of bread.
With China vacuuming up numerical domains, 123.com would be worth vastly more than OneTwoThree.com ($1.5k). You’ll also notice items in other China-favored categories – for example, 4 mixed-character CCC.com’s, ranging from RO0.com ($243) to JU7.com ($1.7k). That’s the same uncomfortably wide span in price that I noted for the CCC.com category 2 weeks ago. Buying at $243 to sell at $1.7k is all well and good; but if RO0.com and JU7.com look to you (as they do to me) interchangeable in terms of quality, then there’s some danger of reversing those price points and losing money.

Perhaps we’re seeing a resurgence of interest in .NET and .ORG. 11 charted above. 5 of those sold in the 4 figures, and 3 fall within the top 8 expired domain sales at NameJet last week. GiveLife.org ($2k) especially seems most appropriate in .ORG rather than .COM. The same might be said of DomesticViolenceCenter.org ($182). In the case of RareBooks.org, the .ORG is – if not preferable to .COM – nevertheless a good choice for an organization or audience built around the shared purpose of collecting and preserving rare books.
Insurance is such a lucrative online niche that even a 23-character, 3-word .NET such as HealthInsurancePolicies.net commands a wholesale price of $250. Resources are what people seek when coping with addiction; so I’d consider AddictionResources.com a decent buy at $295. VIOX.com ($2.1k) sounds like it will be prescribed as a drug. Any guess what it will cure? There’s a great feeling of fun, mystery, and surprise about ItsMagic.com ($2k). Any performing magician would be lucky to own that domain; so would a web design or software agency.
Stier.com ($1.6k) is German for bull. While China and the USA dominate these NameJet charts, European economies are more amply represented by buyers over at Sedo. Data from any single market place is always skewed toward a certain demographic. Overall, the domain market is much more diverse, inclusive, and international than many people realize.
And yet … the buyer of EuroSolutions.com ($1k) isn’t European; he’s Chinese!

Like Hamish.com if there are not many TM’s covering it.

Perhaps a Chinese has some solutions to some of Europe’s problems.
