It’s a longer TLD but shorter address overall.
The Born This Way Foundation (BTWF), a non-profit founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, has switched its web address from a .org to .foundation.
The charity was using bornthiswayfoundation.org, which now forwards to bornthisway.foundation. Although the top level domain is longer, the entire address is three characters shorter.
Born This Way Foundation is named after Lady Gaga’s 2011 album of the same name. Its mission is to inspire youth and build better communities.
.Foundation is one of Donuts’ top level domain names and has just over 5,000 registrations. I suspect many of them just forward to existing sites, so having a charity switch from .org to .foundation is a nice win for the TLD.
Kevin Fink says
By my count, nearly four times as many .foundation domains have actual websites on them as are being redirected (1410 vs 373).
