Here’s who took this year’s survey.
The submission period for this year’s Domain Name Wire Survey, the tenth annual version of the survey, is now closed.
You may recall that I changed the format of the survey last year. The topics are no longer “stuff the ballot box” questions; they focus on overall trends in the domain name business. Survey takers also have to provide some identification details.
That means fewer — but higher quality — responses.
About 200 people took this year’s survey. Before I get into the meat of the results over the next two weeks, here’s an overview of who took the survey:
- People from 28 countries took the survey. Just over half of survey-takers are in the United States.
- 69% of people are domain name investors, 19% work for or own a registrar, and 35% work for or own a different type of domain name business. (There’s obviously quite a bit of overlap between investors and business owners.)
- Of domain name investors, 69% reported that the majority of their domains are .com. That’s down from 80% last year, and this was obviously impacted by the availability of new TLDs.
- About 1/3 of the domain name investors own at least 1,000 domain names.
Stay tuned for the results.
