Michael Bloomberg protects himself in .NYC.
Who is one of the new .NYC domain name’s top registrants?
None other than former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Or a law firm representing him, to be more specific*.
I count 400 domain names that appear to have been registered on Bloomberg’s behalf. Many of them seem like reasonable registrations to protect his interests:
But there are also lots of defensive registrations that might give you a chuckle:
- MikeBloombergRocks.nyc (he didn’t bother with the .rocks version)
It seems that the domain name registration strategy was queued off of registrations in .com. About 80% of the registrations appear to also be registered in .com.
The registrations even include the typo wwwbloomberg.nyc.
Some defensive registrations certainly seem unnecessary. Was it really necessary to register every year of MikeBloomberg2002.nyc to MikeBloomberg2013.nyc?
You can see the full list of Michael Bloomberg domains here.
* As this story has taken off, I’ve had questions for specifics on who registered the domains. 171 were registered by the law firm Wilkie Farr and Gallagher. The remainder were registered by family/wealth management company Geller & Co. The “negative” ones were registered by the law firm.
