New top level domain pays for front page impact.
The backers of the new .ooo domain name have crazy predictions for how many domain names they’ll sell. I’ll tip my hat to them for at least backing it up with some crazy advertising.
Indian e-commerce company Infibeam took out the entire front page of the Times of India today as an ad. Every “fake” article on the page is about domain names and e-commerce, with a play on “ooo” in the headline.
Anil over at Softnik, creator of WatchMyDomains, sent over a copy of the ad (inset). You can also zoom in on a version here to read the actual “stories”.
You’ll also find the pictured cartoon when you zoom in.
Some of the stories on the page include “The meteoooric rise of ‘virtual estate”, “What success e-entrepreneurs need: the right dooomain name” and “iPhone 6 is the new coool”.
The campaign says “Online will be redefined sooon”, and asks people to guess what that means on Twitter using the hashtag #guesswhat. The winner will get an iPhone 6.
It then states “REVEALING SOON. WATCH THIS SPACE.”
I can’t find any actual mention of .ooo on the page. When you consider the ad says “watch this space”, I’m inclined to think that Infibeam will follow up with another front page ad introducing .ooo.
That’s pretty booold.
Samit says
That ad cost around $250,000 and it won’t be the only one.
Not sure if they’ll be able to sell enough domains to cover application and advertising costs.
Not sure if they even want to, this might just be pre-IPO publicity.
