Joseph Peterson provides a round up of expired domain sales from the past week.
GoDaddy’s $17.8k sale of MedTravel.com hearkens back to the $7.1k sale of MedicalTravel.com at NameJet, which I reported in June. It’s tempting to conclude that trimming 2 syllables more than doubled the market value, but the prices could as easily have been reversed. MedTravel.com does feel more like a brand name, as opposed to a generic category. What we can infer is that medical travel is a lucrative niche. Lightning doesn’t strike twice.
Even though the “once prestigious” Canadian law firm of Heenan Blaikie fell apart in February, their domain HeenanBlaikie.com is still worth $4.5k to someone. According to the Toronto Star, “The firm had a profit of about $75 million for 2013 and was contemplating restructuring, but was reportedly brought down by partners who clashed over management style and the firm’s direction.” Given that contentious breakup, ongoing control of the name may function as a trophy for one of the exiting partners … or even a disgruntled employee.
Apparently people pay up for puns. Not just the LoanRanger.com ($2.5k) but NetWit.com ($1.8k). Petek1.com ($1.6k) appears to have been a game of some kind. Back in 2012, IglooFTP.com offered “the easiest as the fastest way to connect to multiple servers, and to transfer multiple files, all in the same time.”

Although I seldom admire domains with a dispensable “USA” suffix, TomorrowUSA.com is a good brand name and a good buy at $50. NOQY.com was quite undervalued at $55, since it can be interpreted as a CVCV domain. .NET seems germane to the topic of a WhoisScript.net. I’m curious to see how that $80 purchase is used.
Curiously, note that “curious” loses a “u” as “Curiosity”, which is bad news for the buyer of Curiousitivity.com ($306). The better version is unregistered, but 7 syllables is a mouthful.
There were a few noticeable clumps or clusters in last week’s expired domain sales. Buyers were after fun: FunFools.com ($2.5k), PlanetFun.com ($1.1k), and OnlineGaming4Fun.com ($1k) … not to be confused with OnlineGaming4CuringCancer.com.
For some reason, buyers were smitten with the number 1: Petek1.com ($1.6k), 1Body.com ($1.3k), Office1.com ($1.3k), and SpecialOne.com ($1.1k). Coincidence or herd mentality?
A more lasting keyword of interest is “health”. Even ugly domains sell each week: HealthWithHeather.info ($487), Help-Health.com ($301), HealthAndSafetyCouncil.org ($174), HealthPolicyForum.org ($154), 4YourHealth.com ($133). Add to those CirugiaYSalud.net (“Surgery and Health” in Spanish). And if you expand the keyword net, you’ll find many more health domains in the table above — e.g. SteviaInfo.com ($298) for the sugar substitute, to say nothing of MedTravel.com ($17.8k). Overall, health will probably turn out to be the top-selling category this past week.
I was a bit surprised to see CellDivision.com pass $1.5k. Naturally, it’s important that cells divide. But I can’t foresee the domain being used unless as the title for some scholarly journal. Likewise, EvolutionaryBeauty.com ($105) can address sexual selection among peacocks.
Non-English domain purchases included Spanish Egyptology: Egiptoliga.net ($220). AssistirNovelas.com ($335) in Portuguese means “watch or attend soap operas” — live filmings perhaps? There’s also LasMargaritasInc.com ($330) and LaCasaDeLosSuenos.com ($281) — Spanish for “the house of dreams”. Oh, and the Vietnamese domain NuVuongCongLy.net ($305), which Google thinks means “Queen of curved glass” — possibly a Catholic title for the Virgin Mary? TVOneCanada.com ($49) actually broadcasts in Urdu for the benefit of Pakistani immigrants.
Colleges and universities were favorite targets during the launch of .XXX, thanks to their ample budgets and equally ample fear of scandal. In a different, more legitimate way, educational institutions — which mostly use .EDU or its ccTLD equivalents — are often asked by private domain owners to purchase a matching .COM. Doing so often makes sense. Given people’s predilection for visiting .COM sites, even .EDU, .MIL, and .GOV lose traffic intended for them.
That’s a long way of saying that NameJet sold BrownCollege.com for $16k. We’ll see whether the buyer was BrownCollege.edu, Brown.edu, or Brown.Rice.edu.
For a moment I mistook ASBAH.org ($2.1k) for transliterated Arabic. But it’s actually the UK’s “Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus”. Their web presence has hitherto been fragmented across the likes of NWYASBAH.org (“North & West Yorkshire”).

Calorie counters make popular apps; so I can imagine Calories.org ($898) being resold for profit. RainForests.net ($760) and Starvation.net ($205) are easier to embrace as .ORGs, but there’s value enough in these large-scale philanthropic topics to spill over into .NET. Overpopulation.net ($341) faces the same difficulty as CellDivision.com (discussed above). But Spike.net — that one has traction as a brand name.
NurseLeads.com was a bargain at $109 when you compare it to MedTravel.com ($17.8k). Private in-home care is a big industry, and nurses do seek leads. NTHolidays.com ($165) would have seen much higher bidding if people had recognized “NT” as Australia’s Northern Territory.
One last thing … Is your cappuccino still in the closet? Find support at GayCoffee.com ($100).
Konstantinos Zournas says
The main difference in the MedTravel.com and MedicalTravel.com price is the venue. Go Daddy has shit crazy prices that are close to end user prices sometimes. Namejet is mostly frequented by domain investors.
Joseph Peterson says
I would have characterized NameJet and GoDaddy the other way round myself.
Robbie says
Namejet you need to be verified to bid over $2500, godaddy any guy with a prepaid can bid you up all day long without consequence.
Joseph Peterson says
Even so, bidders on NameJet often have prearrangements with end users. A lot of outreach occurs mid-auction. I’m sure I’m not the only person receiving sales emails on live NameJet auctions. So we’re frequently looking at vicarious end-user purchases with the verified bidder as stand-in.
EM @KING.NET says
I don’t know why not reveal the name of the bidder instead of cloak alias.
