Sedo releases 2013 sales data.
Sedo published an infographic today highlighting its sales results from 2013.
Here are some notable facts:
* The company sold 37,241 domain names for a total of $70.5 million
* 53% of sales were .com, followed by .de with 15%. 167 different TLDs were traded on Sedo last year.
* The median sales price was $577, with 87% of sales for $2,500 or less. Just 3% of sales were for over $10,000.
* 36% of buyers were in the U.S. and 21% in Germany. No other country accounted for more than 10% of purchases.
* Sales volume decreased each quarter. Dollar wise, sales dropped every quarter except for Q3, which was buoyed by a large undisclosed sale. The total amount transacted in 2013 was higher than 2012.
* 44% of sales were “buy now” and 36% were through negotiation. 11% were auction sales, 4% brokerage, and 5% escrow only.

“87% of sales for $2,500 or less”
Probably the most important stat on this infographic. $0-$2500 equal 87% but $2500-5000 only at 7%. That’s a huge difference. So basically it’s saying price the majority of your names at under $2500 or it’s going to take a long long time to sell them if ever. Unless you have lots of premium names than your names fall into the next category which isn’t so great when you see that only around 1,000 names sell every year above $10,000. 1,000 names is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of premium names for sale. The new G’s are going to cut into this even more. That’s incredible.

Great points Todd.

Doing a couple of quick calculations using the mean reported sales price of $2400 for .com domains, it looks like while .com accounting for 53% of sales by number, .com accounted for 67% of sales by dollar volume.
Since Sedo is particularly strong in European ccTLDs, I’d expect that the .com domains represent an even higher percentage of sales than reported by Sedo in the overall secondary market.

Good observation Nat.

The stats here are quite telling considering that Sedo is very strong in European ccTLDs. My take is, “.com” means a whole lot to a whole lot of people and more than likeloy will remain so for the foreable future. Moreover, if you want to sell your “.com” on Sedo, price many of your domain names below $2500.00. Ouch!

I don’t list on SEDO…but they approach me on behalf of a customer about twice a year. If their avg. sale is 2,400usd…then I’m doing a little better than their avg.on that occasion when I make sale.
