New tech publication Re/code acquires and launches on a .net domain name.
Tech journalists Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg have shut down AllThingsD after their contract with NewsCorp/Wall Street Journal concluded without a new deal. With backing from NBCUniversal and Windsor Media, they’ve launched the successor to AllThingsD on a .net domain: Recode.net.
It appears the duo may have bought the domain name from NameMedia last month. In fact, the whois record still shows BuyDomains.com as the owner.
The Recode.com domain name was obviously taken, and buying it would have been a challenge because it’s in use by an end user. Nero Software, which sells video converter software called Recode, owns the domain name. Oddly, Nero doesn’t forward the domain name to the page on its site specific to the software.

Surprising, considering the backing.I wish them well, but even with the name recognition… they’ve got quite a haul in front of them.

I like ReCode.net – it’s short and memorable. Dot net may well make a comeback as a generic tld. Famous companies and sites on dot net:
PHP.net
Nikon.net
Oversee.net
Media.net
CHS.net – a fortune 500 health care
to think of a few, and my own soon-to-be
LiveAdvertising.net
There are better dot net sites I didn’t say.
Especially when the dot com is parked for years, or in use, as in the example, Recode.com, dot net seems a natural alternative.

Happy new year, Andrew.
Having sold a .org to a start-up funded by $150 million that dropped their .com in its favor, I can assure you that even when money isn’t a factor, corporations can easily choose a domain other than in .com.
In this case, the .net works fine, there is a strong culture supporting the TLD in the coding community, and it works well for the brand.
See you in Vegas!
