Domain name company picks up Mex.com at auction and will likely use it to sell subdomains.
Last month I wrote about an auction at Sedo for Mex.com. The auction closed for 29,111 EUR.
The domain has changed hands and the buyer is domain name company CentralNic.
CentralNic, which went public earlier this month, is known for selling third level domain name registrations at domain registrars the same way second level domain registrations are sold.
Most of the third level registrations it sells are under domains that are similar to ccTLDs, such as de.com and com.de. It also recently started offering registrations under Africa.com.
This leads me to believe that you’ll soon see CentralNic market yourname.mex.com as a domain name for Mexico. Mexico’s country code domain name is .mx.

CentralNIC bought nice two-letter .com names a long time ago, when they were cheap. In recent years they buy just crap, as they are not willing to spend 7-figure on any country code two-letter matching .com, such as MX.COM. This is not their first three-letter .com alternative. They have some other names, such as JPN.COM for example. Now they bought MEX.COM, cheap stuff, which actually brings more traffic to MX.COM and for sure a lot of confusions to many people. Well, it is business and it is about money and only about money. They will make 30,000 Euros soon or later, so it will be profitable for them. But for sure, it will not increase the value of CentralNIC, nor will bring some value to domaining business. It is a shame…

How will it not increase the value of CentralNic if they make 30,000 EUR?
I think you hit he nail on the head. They can make money with Mex.com @ 30k but it’s harder with a two letter domain for $1M…especially in the face of hundreds of new TLDs coming down the pike.

Andrew, the value of the company is not just about the profit. I am saying that they will make some money on MEX.COM, as they soon or later make 30,000 EUR. But on the other hand confusions, related spamming, scams and other stuff related to this cheap procedure of the CentralNIC will decrease the company reputation. This is a downgrading of their portfolio.

I understand what you mean now.

Isn’t MEX too far a stretch?
