Company requests transfer of domain name.
[Update: Apple won the case.] Apple has filed a complaint with World Intellectual Property Organization over the iTunes.net domain name.
The domain has long been a parked domain name with links related to downloading music, so it’s not clear to me why the company is suddenly making a move for the domain name. The current parked page has links exclusively about MP3, iPhones, iPod, and downloading music.
The current registration of the domain name dates to March 1, 2004. However, there was an earlier registration dating to 1999.
It appears that the current registrant of the domain name bought it from BuyDomains in 2006.
Apple owns iTunes.com but not iTunes.org.

How could it not be clear to you why they would file this? Its there TM they want it. If they decided now, 10 years ago or 10 years from now it doesn’t matter and doesn’t mean they “suddenly” filed this.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Shai – sure, they have a right to file now. I’m just curious why they just now got around to it. There’s been a parked page with music download links (and even “iTunes) on this site for ages. Perhaps it’s because now it’s overboard.
Joan says
itunes first registered as a trademark in Jan 2001 with first use Jan 9 2001, so, its very possible if it was a continuous registration that Andrew’s comments are very valid.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Joan – current registrant got it in 2006, so date of registration won’t be a defense.

Apple doesn’t own iPad.com from what I hear. Where did I read Apple intends to drop the, “i” prefix from its new lanuches? Apple must be bummed over the BBC’s iPlayer. iPlayer should be an Apple product!
