Kraft able to hand register domains for spin-off snack company.
Yesterday I wrote about how Abbott Labs was able to freely register the domain name for its new pharmaceuticals spin-off, AbbVie. AbbVie.com was available.
Now Kraft has announced the name of its spin-off $31 billion global snacks business: Mondelēz International Inc.
What’s more, it appears the company was also able to hand register the domain for its new Moniker, Mondelez.com. It probably spent hundreds of thousands of dollars coming up with the name, but then just paid a simple registration fee to get the domain name.
It looks like the domain (and various gTLDs and ccTLDS) was registered February 9 by an intellectual property management registrar. It’s a fair guess that they registered the domain on behalf of Kraft. I’m sure the registrar charged more than $10 for the domain, but you get the point.
Here’s where I need my IDN readers to chime in. I’m no internationalized domain name pro, but a basic search looks like they haven’t registered an IDN version that includes the Ä“. Is this correct?

Yes, it appears they weren’t interested in or are not aware that they can register mondelēz.com (xn--mondelz-17a.com).

@ Brian Null – I just read something similar. But I imagine they ran the ideas through a branding firm (or maybe internally).
