Sunrise period starts today for new .xxx domain name.

Companies have 52 days starting today to participate in the “sunrise” period for .xxx domain names.

The sunrise period closes October 28.

During this period, trademark holders can apply for first dibs on .xxx domain names as well as pay a one time fee to block a .xxx corresponding to their trademark from ever being registered.

    Two sunrise options run concurrently.

Sunrise A is designed for adult companies. They can apply for a .xxx domain corresponding to their existing trademark or existing domain name in another top level domain names.

Sunrise B is for non-adult companies that wish to protect their brands. These companies can pay a one time fee to block their trademark from being registered in .xxx.

Although companies should certainly consider participating in the sunrise, they need not be scared into action. As I’ve written before, there are a number of protections that will minimize nefarious activity in .xxx. Also, the high price of registration should minimize cybersquatting.

More details about the sunrise period can be found here.
