Jason Davis Continues to Hit Paydirt with Jobs Domains

Davis sells two great jobs related domain names.

When it comes to job and career related domain names, Jason Davis has one of the finest track records.

I first talked to Davis in 2009 when he sold the domain name CEO Jobs to recruiter Harry Joiner.

Since then he has continued to sell premium job domains, including another transaction with Joiner for StartupJobs.com.

Over the past two weeks Davis has sold Hr.net and RecruitingTools.com at strong prices.

Despite high unemployment in the U.S., the labor market for high level and technical employees is extremely tight. Just ask anyone trying to hire software developers and systems administrators right now. I think key jobs domains are very valuable to recruiters.

Some of Davis’ other domains I really like are SiliconValleyJobs.com, StorageJobs.com, and SemiconductorJobs.com.

Scammy Surveys Will Bring Renewed Attention to Cybersquatting

Expect a broad crack down thanks to cybersquatters pushing the edge.

Domain parking of trademark domain names and typos pisses off trademark holders.

Scammy, misleading surveys really piss them off.

Google just filed a complaint with WIPO over the domain name YouTube.ph, and you can’t blame the company. If you go to this domain name you’ll be forwarded to VideoRewardCentral.com and a landing page that looks like this:

Whereas a parked page merely includes links to video sites, sites like YouTube.ph are created to trick internet users into thinking there’s a brand endorsement or the person is on the brand’s actual site. They create significant bad will for the company.

In the above example, after completing a “survey”, you can pick your prize if you complete any number of offers from advertisers.

This is part of the reason Facebook recently filed a massive anticybersquatting lawsuit. Some of the domains were pointing to misleading survey sites such as the above.

Believe me, if you think the domain industry got a bad name with ppc parking, you can expect this type of practice to rev it up a notch. That would be bad for the legitimate people in the industry.

VeriSign Gets Mobile with MobileView

New service makes mobile-friendly web sites obtainable by small businesses.

VeriSign MobileviewLast week at HostingCon I caught up with Patti Kelly, director of product management at Verisign, to discuss the launch of a new product that makes it easy for small businesses to create a mobile friendly version of their web site.

VeriSign MobileView uses mobile detection and redirection to render mobile friendly web sites while keeping the same domain name that customers already use.

The key is simplicity. MobileView was created for small businesses who have small marketing budgets and little technical expertise. It’s offered through VeriSign’s partners, so a registrar can offer it to its existing client base.

MobileView automatically creates a mobile friendly display of an existing web site, but users can edit it through an online console. (Users can also create a separate, mobile-only web site from scratch).

If the customers’ web host supports MobileView then they won’t have to edit their existing site’s HTML.

This is one key difference between VeriSign’s offering and dotMobi’s GoMobi. GoMobi users either need to use a separate URL or edit their web site’s HTML to enter a mobile browser detection script.

To gain adoption, VeriSign is offering the service free to its partners on VeriSign managed domains (e.g. .com and .net) through December 2012. Partners can mark the cost up as they please.

Google Kills URL Forwarding as Yahoo Caps Some Non-.Com Domains

Domain parking ad providers make changes.

There have been two announcements from the big domain parking ad providers over the past 24 hours that may affect your domain parking company.

According to an email from NameDrive, Google is banning URL forwarding as of October 1. The parking company says clients need to switch to DNS parking, although it says it’s also working on other solutions. [Update: DomainSponsor just sent a notice to its customers as well.]

Partners have known about Google’s plan to ban URL forwarding for a long time.

It will be interesting to see what effect Google’s move will have on domain parking split-testing platforms such as Above.

TrafficZ sent an email to customers yesterday informing them that Yahoo is “capping” revenue on .biz, .co,
.info, .tv, and .us domain names. If the cap is hit, Yahoo will no longer show ads on the domains for three days. However, parking companies will likely display ads from different ad feeds during this period. From my experience, some of these secondary feeds perform quite well on certain TLDs.

Both of these moves address challenges with domain parking; namely fraud. URL forward is frequently abused and limits Google’s insight into the traffic it is monetizing. Domains such as .biz shouldn’t get much type-in traffic, which may be the reason for the cap.
