DX.com may give site a leg up against the competition.
There are dozens — perhaps hundreds — of daily deals sites on the web a la Groupon and LivingSocial. As consumers struggle to find the best deals amongst them, a number of daily deals aggregator sites have popped up as well. The aggregators collate deals from all of the daily deals sites into an easy-to-consume format.
With so many of these sites coming online, how do you stand out?
Andrew Rosener, who you probably know as the broker behind Media Options, hopes a two letter domain name will help.
Although still in its early stage, Rosener has launched Online Deal Exchange at DX.com.
It’s a good domain name, but is it enough to stand out from the crowd? What are your thoughts?
Troy says
Why would it?

How do deal aggregator make money? Is it even legal to use rss to republish other people’s deals? Why bother doing it for others from a monetze point of view.

A two letter .com would be a differentiator for any business, doesn’t get any easier to remember.
And as domains go this seems to be a good match for the purpose.
Though I’m not too sure how they would monetize this unless the deal sites themselves offer an affiliate commission.
S.W. says
No, not so much. It’s unique, but it’s still an uphill battle for recognition unless they have a significant warchest to create brand awareness.
Whoever can acquire one of the daily/deals root names might have an easier time in the recognition department than a 2 letter domain.
Just my $0.02.
Andrew Rosener says
Thanks for the mention Andrew.
We certainly believe that DX.com WILL make us stand out from the crowd. And as for getting recognition, well it helps that we control a whole bunch of good traffic from our portfolio of domain names and we are going to send it to DX.com.
The beauty of Daily Deals is that they appeal to almost anybody. So I believe that sending redirected traffic from other domain names will have an impact and I believe that traffic will convert even though most people would say that it is not going to be “targeted traffic”.
Time will tell…
We are going to be continually improving DX.com both functionally and aesthetically.
We will be adding a Logo this week, designed or us by Adam Strong’s team at Logo.com.
We’ll also be adding a new functionality for categories – so this way people can actually choose which types of daily deals they want to receive (i.e. – restaurant deals or wellness deals, etc..) and which they do not want to receive.
We’ll also be adding many more cities and expanding into Europe very soon.
Give it a try! All the daily deals in your area from over 400 sites all in one place, one site, one email – DAILY!
Domainer Extraordinaire says
It will fail but not because of the domain name.
Kris Ashton says
It really depends on the site and what it has to offer. If a site is junk, I won’t remember the domain name because I won’t care about it. But if the site offers something of value and is a site I really enjoy, whether it’s an information site or an ecommerce site, I’ll remember the domain name. As far as the daily deals industry, it’s becoming so crowded that startups seem to be having a hard time coming up with sensible names.

I believe that DX.com is a brilliant choice of name reflective of what Drew has delivered via a daily deals aggregator. I believe that there will be a target age demo for this domain name and if there were a way to aggregate only relevant deals to the 25 and unders, I think the website will smash it.
I think that the key to survival for deal sites be it independent and aggregating will be the ability to hone in on a highly targeted and active micro market. I believe that DX.com as a domain name rocks it and you only have to draw a line to FX trading to connect the dots for brand building with two letters. I believe that in time Drew will make it a recognisable brand. I love it and wish him all the best.
Andrew Rosener says
Thanks James for the intelligent review.
Anyone who knows us, knows that we are selective about the businesses we go into and if we do something we crush it!
DX.com will succeed – it’s just a question of will it be a nice profitable side project or is it going to be a game changer – I’m pushing for the later…
S.W. says
Concur with Kris, the daily deal industry has become rather crowded with startups with more on the way, it will be interesting to see how much further it can grow before it reaches some sort of saturation point. Btw, very informative site, best of luck at the Chicago conference.

@Andrew Rosener
Can you share with us what daily deal aggregate script do you use for your website? Is it an off the shelf script or something you build from scratch? Thanks.
