Safety and security will be concerns once again for upcoming ICANN meeting.
[UPDATE: ICANN will move the meeting to another location.]
I’ve got to hand it to ICANN’s meeting planners. They have a penchant for choosing locales that give less-traveled attendees heartburn.
This hit a pinnacle for last year’s Nairobi meeting, where many of the biggest companies and sponsors decided to stay home over security fears.
(Nairobi was probably a safer venue than the March 2009 meeting in Mexico City.)
ICANN returns to San Francisco for its March meeting, but then it’s off to another trouble spot in June: Jordan.
Jordan is quickly moving to the top of pundits’ lists of the next country to see revolution after Tunisia and Egypt.
So pay close attention to what happens in Jordan in coming months. And don’t book your travel ticket to the June meeting just yet.

If they have to pick another “IDN ccTLD” Asian location as a replacement, I vote for Bangkok.
(although Marina del Rey is probably more likely)

Why do they pick these venues for summer? Few year’s back it was Morocco.
The temp is gonna be 110 +

“Why do they pick these venues…?”
Maybe it’s to discourage attendance.
🙂

tricolorro might just have a very valid point there.
Maybe it will backfire and the Jordanians will be screaming, “Off with the infidels heads!!!”

Nick is right. it’ll be an ICANN Melting!

Next up: North Korea and Iran.
These folks just don’t get it.

David Olive just posted on the GNSO Council list that the meeting will not be held in Jordan. The new location has not yet been disclosed (although rumor has it that we’ll be going to Singapore).
