Top 10 Domain Name Wire Stories of 2010

A look back at 2010 on Domain Name Wire.

2010 is drawing to a close, but let’s not look forward without looking back. Here are the top 10 stories on Domain Name Wire in 2010 based on total page views.

1. .Co Domain Name is .Coming – the headline may have been an understatement. .Co made headlines across the tech world this year, and will get a mainstream boost when Go Daddy features the extension in its upcoming Super Bowl commercial.

2. Bank of America Wants You to Know Its Executives Don’t Suck – I wrote this article just last week so it hasn’t had much time to rack of pageviews. But thanks to mentions in The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, and many others, this article lands at #2 for the year.

3. GoDaddy Replaces .Com with .Co, Now Default Choice – more .co news. This replacement lasted about 24 hours, but created lots of buzz.

4. Confirmed: Facebook Acquires FB.com Domain Name – you can now visit the world’s largest social network at FB.com. But the company still hasn’t settled a dispute with American Farm Bureau over Facebook’s FB trademark application.

5. ICANN Moves Forward on .XXX – unfortunately for ICM Registry, I could have continued using this same headline after each ICANN board meeting.

6. Original Registrant of CamRoulette.com Sued – one of the most bizarre domain name sales of the year.

7. How to Maximize Chances of Getting .Co Domains, and at Lowest Prices – a lot of people maximized their chances.

8. Google to Treat .Co as International Domain – Google lets site owners change international targeting of .co domain names.

9. Conroy Disses .XXX – one of the guys behind a proposed Australian content blocking scheme comes out against the .xxx top level domain.

10. Is Sex.com Really the World’s Most Valuable Domain Name? – maybe not, but it is worth $13 million.

Two Smart Financial Moves for DOMAINfest Conference

Conference cost increases next week.

The domain business’ biggest conference of 2011 is a month away. But you can make two smart financial moves by buying your DOMAINfest conference pass by the end of this week:

1. The price goes up $100 on January 1, so you can save $100 by getting your pass this week.

2. By purchasing in 2010 you can record your expense on this year’s taxes, thus lowering your current tax liability. (You can also do well by purchasing your plane ticket.)

Seems like a pretty good reason to get your pass today if you think you’re going to go.

Here’s what I’m most looking forward to for this year’s show, which takes place February 1-3 in Santa Monica, CA:

- Bob Parsons’ keynote presentation “Luck & Perspective” on Tuesday

- PITCHfest event where people with products/services for the industry can pitch their wares

- Connecting with the largest domain business audience of the year all in one place

- The small party Thursday night

Go Daddy Crosses 45 Million Domain Name Mark

Registrar group hits another milestone.

Yesterday at 6:02 PM MST, The Go Daddy Group topped 45 million domain names under management across its registrars. This comes about 9 months after the company crossed the 40 million mark.

This is an incredible accomplishment, as the nearest competitor has about 10 million domain names under management. There are just over 200 million domain names registered worldwide, meaning that Go Daddy has over a fifth of the market. It also claims to register about half of all new domain name registrations.

Companies like to look at revenue per employee as a benchmark. This is certainly a good measure. But Go Daddy might also look at domains registered per employee. With 2900 employees, that’s 15,517 per employee. Not bad.

The Go Daddy Group’s two main registrars are GoDaddy.com and Wild West Domains.
