The leading whois resource launches its iPhone app.
DomainTools launched its iPhone (slash-ipod touch-slash-ipad) app this week. It’s a fairly simple app for now, but the company says it’s working to add lots of functionality in the near future.
For now you get a few basic functions. First, of course, is the ability to do a whois lookup. The whois result includes hyperlinks on the email addresses (so you can email the owner) and the phone numbers (so you can call if you’re on an iPhone), which is a nifty feature.
You can also check availability for domains across a number of gTLDs and country code domains. You can edit your ccTLD regions, ultimately searching over 300 top level domain names at once. You can also register domain names through the app.
Finally, you can view the current thumbnail for the domain name, much like what you see on the DomainTools site when you do a whois lookup. In the first edition of the app, you can easily switch between the whois and availability search without re-entering the domain name. However, clicking on the thumbnail view requires you to re-enter the domain name you are searching.
Overall I’d say the app is worth downloading. It’s a good app now, and I’m sure will soon include many of the advanced features available at the main DomainTools web site.

Thanks for the post on this new domain name app! I have an ipad and am always on the lookout for apps that I can use for business instead of just for entertainment … makes me feel more productive while on my ipad 😉

I love the apps. And speaking of the iPhone, there’s a great new article about just some of the real apps that are hiding in the OS that will allow any forensic team to have a field day if you ever lose your phone.

Any idea what happened to this app? I went to put it on my new iPhone 6 and it is no longer in the app store…
