Sedo Hits 6 Figures with Three Domain Names

Domain broker has good sales week.

Sedo completed three six figure domain name sales last week, capping off a great week for the company. First, it sold the three number domain name 027.com for $100,000. It also sold Pengyou.com and Pengyou.net, each for $100,000. PengYou appears to be a Mandarin word for “friend”.

Two of Sedo’s other big sales are ones I’ve already written about, including Rage.com for $49,999 and TVs.co.uk for 51,000 GBP.

Will ICANN Insiders Get Leg Up with New TLDs?

Door opened to favor long time new TLD supporters.

A lot of companies have been involved with shaping the new top level domain name process. They’ve spent significant funds over the past several years working through the many drafts of the applicant guidebook and some have been involved since before the first draft was published.

Technically, these early supporters don’t get a leg up in the application process, other than shaping policy to their liking.

Or do they?

During yesterday’s ICANN meeting, Constantine Roussos of the .Music initiative asked if he would get any priority given how long he’s been promoting .music. After all, anyone else can apply for the TLD when applicantions open up as well.

…I would like to discuss the outreach campaign, the communication campaign. I know I have been running with my initiative for years now. And in the DAG, there is no protection for someone like me. To Michael Palage’s point, I do have a trademark in dot music. And we’ve been working on this for years now and trying to communicate what we’re doing to the whole world, and that’s what we’ve been doing.

However, the DAG does not ensure myself and any other applicant that has been around and working on it any fairness, I might say.

I will give you an example. Let’s say the applications start. Some other dot music applicant comes in and says, “Hey, pay me $400,000 to work. We’ll do auction or we’ll do that.” These are real-life scenarios. So there’s a few things that need to be considered.

So if outreach and communication is important, maybe in the DAG you guys can add a point somewhere that says, Hey, if in your community application you’ve done sufficient outreach,” let’s say a year, “then
you get an extra point,” or something that gives a good job for doing something and reaching out.

One of the complaints about new TLDs is that many people don’t know about them, and so there needs to be a level playing field so that “insiders” don’t have an advantage.

That’s why I’m surprised by ICANN Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz’ response:

And I also — I also understand, you know, the almost frustration of you — of you all that have been here for a long time working on this process and honing it, invested your time, not only in building up your brand but also in giving your efforts as a volunteer to making sure the process is as robust as it can be and as fair as it can be.

I understand it will be for us to think about how those who have participated in the process might be rewarded….

7 Steps to the Launch of New TLDs

Kurt Pritz explains what’s left to do in the long march to new top level domain names.

During Monday’s New gTLD Program Update session during ICANN’s meeting in Brussels, ICANN Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz spelled out the steps remaining to launch new top level domain names. Here they are in his words.

1. “So we’ll take the public comment in and then make a recommendation for community and board decision whether this should be the last draft version of the guidebook or not.”

2. “We have to finish the economic study”

3. “finish the program budget and get that approved”

4. “continue on with our operational readiness activities that are tracking to a program plan”

5. “continue executing on our communications strategy and the policy recommends a four-month communication. Well, we would just want to hit that over the head with a sledgehammer in an attempt to ensure that nobody in any region of the world comes up after the process is launched and says, “You
know, I didn’t know about this.”

6. Finish the root zone scaling study

7. and then provide applicant support

And there you have it.

ESPN Wants ESPN3d.com Domain Name For New 3D Network

Sports network asks arbitration panel to give it domain name for new 3D network.

Sports network ESPN has filed a complaint with National Arbitration Forum to get the domain name ESPN3d.com.

The company announced its new ESPN 3D network in January, saying that it would show 85 sporting events in 3D during its first year. The 3D broadcasting kicked off this month with matches from the World Cup, but the network still doesn’t have the ESPN3D.com domain name.

It turns out that Los Angeles company Ideal Entertainment registered the domain name back in 2006. It used GoDaddy’s Domains by Proxy service to shield its identity. But with the filing of the UDRP, the proxy service removed the whois mask.

This will be an easy decision for the arbitration panel. But I’ve got to wonder, why did the company wait until the June launch of the network to go after the domain rather than taking care of it when it decided to launch the network?

Oh, nevermind. That would require prioritizing domain names in the product lifecycle — something few companies do.

DOMAINfest Global Moves to February for 2011

Largest domain conference sets date for 2011.

Oversee.net’s flagship DOMAINfest Global conference is moving back a week this year to the first week of February. The conference will take place February 1-3, 2011 and will again be held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, California.

Hotel reservations for the event are already available. If it’s anything like last year, the hotel will sell out in a hurry even though the entire hotel is reserved for the event.

Early bird admission is $995 and available through September 30, 2010.

Last year’s event attracted about 650 people including domain investors, service providers, and lawyers. It was highlighted by a night at The Getty and a private charity fundraising party at the Playboy Mansion.

There are two additional DOMAINfest conferences between now and the main event in February. In August there will be a one day “power networking” event in New York City, and the company will hold a European show in Prague this October.

[Updated incorrect year.]
