No surprise — domainers are ahead of the curve on new browser and operating system usage.
It’s been a while since I looked at the Google Analytics section for visitor browsers and operating systems. But this week someone pointed out that Domain Name Wire wasn’t loading correctly in Internet Explorer 8, so I checked to see how many people that affected.
As far as browsers are concerned, here are the rankings on DNW:
Firefox 45%
Internet Explorer 32%
Chrome 11%
Safari 9%
You can further break down the IE users:
IE 8 20%
IE 7 8%
IE 6 4%
This was interesting, but even more interesting is mobile adoption. Thanks to unique operating systems for all of Apple’s devices, I can now see which mobile devices people are using — including iPad. Here’s a breakdown:
Windows 79%
Macintosh 14%
Linux 2.84%
iPhone 2.22%
Android .38%
iPod .22%
iPad .21%
Apparently some people use Playstation 3 to access the site as well.
Usage of “newer” browsers and operating systems by DNW readers is well above market penetration rates. This shows, to no surprise, that domainers tend to be early adopters of web technologies.
If you ever have a problem rendering Domain Name Wire in your browser or operating system, please let me know.

How do these numbers impact direct navigation via domain names? If this good at all for domains?

What about Opera users? I always use Opera to visit this website, surely there must be something out there.
Andrew Allemann says
@ jon – there’s a big drop after Safari. Opera comes in 5th, but with less than 1%.

I think you may have missed the point about your site not loading correctly in Internet Explorer 8.
In looking at your test results from different validators there are so many problems with your coding it’s amazing that your site loads well in any browser.

My results are nearly identical. Even down to the PS3 visitors apparently haha.
Are you going to enable a mobile version of DNW? I’m using WPtouch.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Mark Fulton – I already have a mobile version, but the typical iPhone/Android will show full version.

Is this news? I would HOPE that not everyone in the business is using IE6 and godaddy as their primary registrar.
Let’s all give our selfs a pat on the back for being in the technology sector, and adopting new trends in our own business 😐
