5 Alternatives to Traditional Domain Name Parking

Parking revenue got you down? Here are 5 alternatives to try.

Here are five alternatives to traditional pay-per-click domain parking.

RootOrange – RootOrange will lease your domain name on a local basis to multiple parties. In theory, this leasing will provide you with a steady income stream that should top what you can achieve by using the domain at an international-only level. Check out DivorceLawyer.com for an example.

Shopping Feeds – if you have a product domain, you should consider “developing” your domain by including products on the page. This will make it look like an e-commerce site. SmartName offers SmartName Shops, which uses a PPC feed from Shopping.com. You can also try Epik Product, which uses various affiliate feeds. Epik charges a set up fee, but offers a guarantee.

Octane360 – Octane360 creates directory sites on your geo domain names (e.g. WashingtonAllergists.com) and then sells directory listings to local businesses via a call center. Sites can also be monetized using PPC and pay-per-lead.

DevHub – DevHub offers a simple, WYSIWYG editor to create web sites quickly. You can drag-and-drop shopping product feeds, news, video widgets, and more. Monetization is primarily through PPC, but also includes affiliate and CPA options.

WhyPark – now owned by domain parking company Parked.com, WhyPark quickly develops domain names using articles and other syndicated content. You can also add your own custom content for better results. Although this is traditionally recommended for domains that don’t get much traffic, WhyPark has been able to take good type-in domains and make more money than with traditional parking.

    Everything needs to be time-tested. Please report back on some of these newer companies like RootOrange and Octane360 with your results in 2-3 months.

    Thanks, Jim

    @ Jim – I’ve reported back on Octane360 already. Not working with RootOrange.

    Great write-up Andrew.

    I wanted to also add that SmartName, in addition to our Shopping Feed, launched this year a content site development option for domain name developers. Domain name owners now have a single platform to turn their sites into user-friendly eCommerce stores, content-rich sites, or keep them as parked pages. What’s available to our SmartName publishers are the same tools that we’ve successfully tested and use on more than 100,000 of our own websites, such as TVSitcom.com and MovieCity.com.

    For more information regarding our services, contact one of our world-class Account Managers at http://www.smartname.com/smartname/contact-us.jsp.

    Thanks,

    “Please let the other companies mentioned have equal time.”

    Well it seems to me as just another blog visitor ( and fan of DNW) that all the other companies have to do to get “equal time” is to do what Kirsten did and chime in.

    I have 68 Ecomm stores created and 2 Content sites created with smartname so far and I plan to do quite a few more. The click values seem a bit lower than parking but I am noticing more clicks which makes up for it. Also I am noticing quite a few of them getting first page google rank and holding which can’t be bad for end user leads when your sitting in organic listings for free and paid advertisers should notice this if you throw an inquire link on them. Doesn’t take much development to get ranked with a strong keyword product .com domain and so far over 2 months+ my revenue and rankings keep increasing.

    Buddy,
    you totally missed Noomle.com…
    IMO the best alternative out there.

    Thank You Domain Wire Great Job, Kristen we are really excited-SmartName has come a long way in a very short time table Cheers. The smartname platform turns parking sites into small business sites. Great Job, the proof is in the pudding ranking and indexing a must, we the owners need blog and add a central directory so we can inner communicate and drive more organic communication between publishers, thoughts, and we don’t have to depend on ppc/cpm for our revenues solely,thank you Kristen. Whypark congratulations our sites are also ranking and indexing. Yahoo and Google are approx 25% of the marketing and advertising world many horizons ahead. We can move forward when ready ppc/cpm limits our full revenue potention. Thank You from williamblairpinc.com

    Andrew, my bad. I was just thinking of SmartName as more than eCommerce – they also offer content sites and parked pages. Yet have to agree that their main forte are eCommerce websites.

    I’ve been using venturenames.com for a few years. They use adsense parking templates, they seem to rank quite well with Google and Yahoo. I’ve also sold a few domains there to end users.

  14. April 14th, 2010 | 9:54 am

    @ Arseny – no problem. And you’re write, I neglected to point out their new content solution.

  15. April 14th, 2010 | 11:20 am

    I agree with the Wombat, Noomle.com is certainly in my top 5 as well.

    Thanks for mentioning rootorange and octane360, I’ve been meaning to sign up for ro. They both sound like they are worth trying out with a couple geo domains with to see evaluate results.

    howdy,

    i bought dozens of expired domains that were indexed in google, put them on whypark, and recently noticed that 90% of them have been deindexed in google.

    thanks whypark!

  18. April 15th, 2010 | 9:59 am

    @ duke – when you buy expired domains, Google starts deindexing them

  19. duke
    April 15th, 2010 | 2:41 pm

    @Andrew, boy i find that hard to believe.

    the few expired domains that i developed with original content and kept in line with GWG (google webmaster guidelines) have remained indexed.

    plus i know of at least a couple successful internet marketers who base an entire business model around purchasing expired domains and developing and monetizing them.

    also, other folks have complained that whypark is causing deindexing of their domains, new and used.

    GWG states, “Avoid…”cookie cutter” approaches…with little or no original content.”

    whypark can certainly be described as cookie cutter with little or no original content.

    i wish i had paid more attention to GWG earlier, rather than rely on a lazy whypark approach – an expensive lesson.

  20. April 15th, 2010 | 2:44 pm

    @ duke – it is true that if you create a cookie cutter site without original content, you can get de-indexed from Google. WhyPark lets you add custom content.

    That said, I used to make a ton of money buying expired domains and then creating sites on them to take advantage of the search rankings. That’s much tougher now. Google has gotten a lot smarter, and tracks domains that go through the deletion or direct-transfer process. To what extent they devalue the links I’m not sure.

  22. April 16th, 2010 | 8:01 am

    @Duke

    You self-described your own “google deleted me” problems by calling Whypark a “cookie cutter solution with little or no original content”.

    Why don’t you just “out” yourself and get it over with? Whypark provides you a FREE website hosting location and adfeed, where YOU can provide ALL the ORIGINAL content you want. How you build your WhyPark site is how your results will show… ummm… just like any other service, unless you’re PAYING them big money to build it for you. I am confident you aren’t paying Whypark to do this for you — you just want it done for you for FREE. And if Whypark’s free content doesn’t do the job for you, then you’re crying like a Debbie.

    Since you don’t indicate that you’re even providing rudimentary attempts at adding your own original content to Whypark, why are you whining about their service?

    So, how much money have you lost at Whypark with your buttkicking premium domains that were making $$$ at landing pages, (which never are indexed by google), after moving them to Whypark?

    Your comments are uninformed, telling, and obviously biased against Whypark with no “facts” other than people blaming Whypark for Google delisting. Anyone with experience in this business knows that Google can delist even the most professionally built websites, for one reason or another, as Google sees fit.

    Nice try.

  23. April 16th, 2010 | 9:01 am

    @Stephen Douglas

    Totally agree Stephen!

    On the other hand, if you do own some premiums “GET THEM DEVELOPED” professionally, if you can do it yourself then fine. And if you have “kickass” domains there’s no point in wasting them on a crappy parking page or even plonk them on the likes of WhyPark or DevHub.

    If you bought a shop on a high street your not going to sit back and let it crumble, your going to invest in a face lift, stock it up and market it! That’s why you bought it, right – as a business venture??

    There are too many domainers who buy domains and then wait for end-users to purchase for business projects. Seriously, where’s the entrepreneurship or vision in that?

    Your buyer is running away with your shop!

    So why not build some empires, and accumulate some serious dosh you can retire on later?

  24. April 16th, 2010 | 10:05 am

    To Huw Williams, Great advise Huw, Build empires Great vision for all of us. Notthing is ever free in business. Hard work and plow forward with your vision of success. 25. April 16th, 2010 | 11:13 am

    @williamh

    Glad you agree man!

    But one thing I’ve found with vision – it has to aspire you enough to make you want to push forward. You must select a domain/project which rocks your boat!

    There’s no point in trying to create something your not that interested in, here’s an example:

    I have no interests in MMORPG “gaming”, although a few years ago I bought the .com thinking I could build on it and I had a few ideas in the running. A few years later I shifted it – low and behold someone does the right thing and makes it happen – why? Because they are into it big time!

    Here’s another one, Ajax! I use Ajax ALL the time in my designs. But I don’t want to ramble on about it in some blog or community using a domain like AjaxWorld.com. I have better things to do with my time “probably because I’m not that geeky”. So I sold the domain a few years back – look at it now. Obviously a SERIOUS setup aimed at geeks :)

    Bottom line, choose a project your proper into – it will last longer..

  26. April 16th, 2010 | 11:23 am

    Also, if you have domains which you have absolutely no interest in developing – FLOG THEM – let the right person do the right thing, and don’t be such a grabbing domainer!

    Otherwise your stifling creativeness!

    Probably another reason why domainers are getting a bad name..??

    In the interest of fairness, DevHub did recently fix a technical problem I was having with one of my websites on their platform.

    I am tracking a 28-domain personal real-time Epik.com Rob Monster guaranteed Product Portfolio.

    You can see if I am successful or a flop and make up your own mind on Epik.

    Yes, I am a big fan of Rob and Epik. :)

    This would be useful info because I have a list of product domains that I am looking for an appropriate platform to set them up on.

    @Ozie, I am 100% in Rob’s & Epik.com corner. So I am biased. I try to write objectively.

    I would like to hear more about Octane360. That sounds like a very interesting business model. Best, Todd

  31. June 29th, 2010 | 11:28 am

    @Ozie,

    If you’ve got great product names with .com extensions, the place to go is DomainProfitSharing.com, which is operated by ClickShops Inc. ClickShops already runs a couple dozen product sites like GunSafes.com, MassageChairs.com, and LeatherFurniture.com, and we’re just launching a service to build out and run similar sites for domain owners. We call it Domain Profit Sharing or DPS. ClickShops builds the sites, makes arrangements with manufacturers for products, handles the customer service, shipping, sales taxes, etc., just the way we do with our proprietary sites. Domainers get a monthly payment for their cut of the total sales without any other hassle. They need to be patient while their site comes up in the rankings (we don’t use any gimmicks or black-hat SEO), but it’s well worth it.

    This only works for good product-based .com names. We only accept submission for names showing 100+ exact match searches in WordTracker, but for people with those great names, DPS is just the ticket.
