VeriSign Joins List of Companies Not Going to Nairobi

.Com registry to participate remotely.

ICANN nairobiThe world’s biggest registrar, Go Daddy, has already announced it is not sending anyone to the ICANN meeting in Nairobi due to security concerns. Now you can add the biggest registry, VeriSign, to the list.

The company confirmed to me today via e-mail that it will not be sending anyone to participate in-person at the event:

VeriSign has decided to participate virtually in the upcoming ICANN meetings in Nairobi. We made this decision after a thorough review of the ongoing security concerns in the region, and join numerous other registrar and industry partners who have made a similar decision. Our full contingent of people will attend remotely – in as many meetings that are available. ICANN is working to ensure adequate capabilities for remote participation, and VeriSign will take full advantage of the tools that ICANN makes available.

Hopefully ICANN’s remote participate tools will be able to handle the added online load.

    How embarrassing for ICANN.

Just another example of their ineptitude in all matters.

Nairobi? Where is the next meeting? Watts, California, Midnight in the middle of a dark parking lot. How about Iraq?

Meetings should not be in 3rd wolrd countries, there better suited for arms dealer meetings.

If less mainline people and companies attend the Icann meeting, they will only hear the fanatics.

    Maybe that was the plan?

Nairobi is actually quite safe and has been for the last 100 years, this goes to show the stereotype firms attach to third world countries.

Its totally stereotyping….. Nairobi is Safer than Johannesburg… this is the biggest load of crap I’v heard this year.. These companies should give us the real reasons y they ain’t attending
And I dont appreciate the insult of 3rd World Countries holding Arms Dealers conference… it’s a stupid remark which should be withdrawn…

You are safer in Nairobi than some areas of New York City or LA.

But, I know better than to go into any dangerous area.

I wonder how they are going to fill a vacancy if something happens?

    “Nairobi is actually quite safe”

Real crime stats are not reported in disorganized countries, so who knows.

Just flying into African air space is dangerous. That is a stat fact.

I wonder if Icann read the U.S. State dept warning?
I realize Icann wants to fight anything the U.S. Gov’t suggest but this warning should have been a red flag for them.
