Biking.com Domain Name Sells for $250,000
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Two weeks, two great recreational domain sales.
Domain name brokerage NameMedia has sold the domain name Biking.com for $250,000. This comes just a week after selling Boating.com for the same amount. As you might have guessed, the buyer of both names is the same, Stein Holdings. That’s a half million bucks in a couple weeks, instantly putting the buyer on the map for recreational domains.
Thanks to the Biking.com sale, NameMedia sold about $800,000 worth of domains in the past week, a couple hundred thousand over its normal weekly pull. It sold 308 .com domains at a median price of $1,100 and 68 other domains at a median price of $888.

How will they make money with them? odd names, no?
Why has no one talked about the sale of partysupplies.com for 360K which was sold by Oversee’s through their portfolio brain portfolio.
I have always loved that name and the person who bought it has such HUGE opportunity to make that into a 10 million a year business. The person who bought the name “GETS IT”
See ya in New Orleans
Steven – haven’t seen that sale anywhere.
Right on the heels of Boating.com for same price, 250k. Right?
Great domain sale.
Biking.com is a great domain.
how will you make money with this biking domain? Only options I see are ads. Which means you need a ton of marketing dollars to get the traffic. Then you must keep them coming back.
Only thing that would make sense is to start your own line of bikes and brand them through this domain.
Any other ideas?
Or I assume just hold the domain till 1 of the big bike companies wake up.
Jack, I disagree. A lot of people turn to bikes for recreation. You’ve got motor-biking, recreational bikes, professional biking etc. I am sure lots of people buy their bikes/bike parts etc online too, and with biking.com you have the category killer.
The same goes for boating.com. Both great names.
John
Here’s the thing about that name – nobody uses the word “biking”. I don’t go “biking” I take a bike ride, go for a ride or something else.
great name, but might be tough.
Seems namemedia is having a premium domain garage sale lately.
@Gordon,I go biking all the time. I think you are wrong there. just look at the word use on google.
biking sounds odd, no offense. Sounds like the olden days. Its 2010 boys, web 2.0!
biking is a popular term for mountain biking – not sure whether it’s used as much for road biking. The term ‘mountain biking’ is actually more than twice as popular as the term ‘biking’ according to the Google Keyword Tool, with 110k/49.5k exact match monthly searches respectively.
