Sedo Web Site Redesign Goes Live

Sedo web site redesign launches today.

At the SedoPro Partner Forum in Key West this year, the company said it was working on a redesign of its site. The site had become outdated and needed a refresh.

The new design went live this morning:

sedo-redesign

The first thing you’ll notice is a much smaller home page that fits it the typical browser without scrolling down. To achieve this, Sedo has removed much of the real estate for current domain listings. It has replaced these with rotating boxes for featured domains, top domains, and auctions. The recent sales section has been removed from the home page, but you can find it on the Market Activity page. Also removed from the home page is a login box; you’ll now need to click on a link in order to login.

Once you get past the home page, you won’t see much of a difference if you aren’t logged in. But when you do log in, you’ll be greeted by a “domain management portal” which quickly shows you your activity level, parking earnings, and total sales for the past month and year-to-date.

The domain parking controls are largely unchanged, and users should be familiar with most aspects of the user interface when logged in to their account.

Overall my first impression is positive, although I’m sure a few minor annoyances will pop up. For example, it would certainly be nice for the login box to reappear on the home page.

Sedo Web Site Redesign Goes Live – http://tinyurl.com/ydmzt87

Okay I can very much enjoy the redesign, but I have one very pressing question:

What is with the fake persona on the right pane? If trends are any indication, the happy nondescript office personnel on the front page has had its heyday and can be found on any templated website. I can’t tell Sedo apart from Namejet now!

My only concern is that the active auctions aren’t going to receive as much exposure.

The bottom of the home page says ‘Top domains’ however, it doesn’t mention that the ‘more’ link takes you to the active auction section.

I currently have ComputerSpeakers.com up for auction and am nervous about auction traffic dropping substantially.

I agree with Ed, the happy smiling office worker does seem quite dated. This front page looks very generic and quite unmemorable.

Worst page redesign ever… who are they trying to emulate? Godaddy? With all that ‘crap’ and hardly any data on the homepage… :-(

It’s possible that having the picture of the woman boosts visitor engagement with the web site. Some studies show that this sort of personal connection subconsciously affects visitors, resulting in higher conversions. Especially with something like a domain brokerage, I’m sure having a human element helps.

I notice that the “buyer’s activity index” no longer functions.

They made the buttons and links more difficult to hit.
Don’t they realize more of the visitors are using netbooks and smartphones?

I realize change is sometimes difficult to accept.
But, change is suppose to make our use easier, not more difficult.

It looks like the web designers have more influence at Sedo than the marketing department.

It looks pretty unless you have to use it.

I agree….it’s harder to use. Moving panes and buttons don’t make for fast and easy navigation. It just looks cool and nothing else. Great functionality is gone.

Yes….the smiling woman is outdated. Maybe not in Europe though?

I don’t know about the smiling woman being outdated.

Whether smiling woman, laughing woman, or whatever woman, if it does not improve the user experience, what is the point?

Change for changes sake? Apart form the cosmetic overhaul the UI seems to have been been borked :-(

The parking overview section has gone – Why?

The replacement reports state “To view your past statistics, please change the time period to the previous month, “all months” , or “last 32 days”… but there’s no field to change the time period to “all months”.
Anybody else experiencing difficulties or is it just me…

@Craig I agree with you. The graphic is great but it’s not very intuitive, web usability is missing

I am already so sick of that smarmy redhead endlessly giving me the evil eye from the SedoPro stats pages.

    Begone, wench from Hell.
Anyone know a good banishment incantation ?

seems they haven’t paid to designer well lol :D

  16. December 8th, 2009 | 1:52 pm

It is a crap! waste of real estate.

Featured domains more link missing ‘make offer’.

They should spend more real estate to the paid listing.

    > seems they haven’t paid to designer well lol

This seems an obvious example of where they’ve let the programmers be the designers.

As someone whose made that awful mistake years ago, before I learned my lesson, here’s a bit of free advice for Sedo.

Programmer’s design skills asymptote to zero.
Give them a quality storyboard to follow.

Lda, I don’t think Sedo has programmers.

    .. Seriously..

  20. December 9th, 2009 | 4:20 am

    I like it…

I’d prefer the LOGIN Box be
    on the Main Page…

I’d like the option of setting up
routine tasks once and having the
    automatically happen…

    Such as:

    eMailing me my Entire Portfolio
Inventory once a month… in cvs format
    (prefer txt format)

    ALL the SOLDS at SEDO
    EVERYONES – eMailed
    Daily… as a Newsletter…
    ALL for that day
    and mailed Daily…
    to SedoSOLDS@DomainBELL.com

And then – I’d like to see
    an advance chart of upcoming
    events and specials — such
    as the themed Auctions…
    for example — the current
    promo for domains in the
    HEALTH field…
I’d like to see these planned
    well in advance and posted
    at least 3 months early…
    to give us (domain owners)
    time to sort/organize/gather/
    promo fitting entry names…
