Green Day Wants AmericanIdiot.com Domain Name

Green Day show heads to Broadway; rock group wants domain name.

American Idiot Green DayAlternative rock band Green Day has filed for arbitration to get the AmericanIdiot.com domain name. The timing of its arbitration request is not coincidental.

Green Day’s American Idiot album was released back in 2004 and won a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2005. Hit singles from the album include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends”.

So why go after the domain name now, five years later? Green Day’s American Idiot musical is heading to Broadway. The musical premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and was extended multiple weeks. More information about the musical is at Rolling Stone. It makes sense that the group wants to get the domain name as the show grows in popularity.

The domain name changed ownership earlier this year to a Quebec address. Previous parking pages showed ads for Green Day tickets, but the current one is generic and focuses on the “American” aspect of the domain name.

The case should be resolved within a couple months.

Google Awarded Patent for Local Search Integrated with Whois

Google gets patent for integrating local contact information with search results.

Google has been awarded U.S. patent 7624101 for “Enhanced Search Results”. The enhancements are related to Google’s local search capabilities, including returning a result for a business that includes a phone number, address, and map. You’ve probably seen these search results at the top of a Google results page:

third-base-google-local

The patent describes a system that captures phone and address information from the target web site and displays it in the search results. A couple embodiments include accessing the domain name whois database to retrieve the information. In one embodiment, the whois record’s address and phone number may be used to verify the information on the target web site. In another, the whois record may be the sole source of address and phone number information.

The full patent image is not yet available, but the text is available here.

LuxuryNames Domain Name Auction Ends Today

First LuxuryNames auction ends today.

LuxuryNames.comThe first ever LuxuryNames auction has attracted a number of bids in advance of its closing this afternoon. Lots will begin closing at 12:15 PST on SnapNames.

As of 7 am PST today, 19 domain names have received bids. The highest so far is $2,600 for CheapHouseInsurance.com. Many of the domains have prices starting at only $99.

I have three domains in the auction, one of which has received several bids already: WeeklyPlanner.com. The domain was originally registered back in 2000. I sold MonthlyPlanner.com at an auction earlier this year, and believe WeeklyPlanner.com is a better domain.

My other domains are Newlyweds.net and MusicPhones.com. Newlyweds.net has an opening price of $3,000. Newlyweds.com sold for $130,000 last year. MusicPhones.com is a great domain with a phrase used extensively in the mobile phone industry. It was even used repeatedly in a Samsung commercial. To get an idea of the usage of this term, see the Google results.

DomainTools Launches MyWhois

New MyWhois feature is a big usability improvement.

DomainToolsA month or two ago DomainTools changed the way it displays whois data. Whereas whois records and associated domain data used to be displayed on one page, it switched to a tabbed view to make it easier to read.

But some people are stuck in their old ways and (understandably) didn’t like clicking between multiple tabs to get the data they needed. DomainTools has figured out a solution that provides the best of both worlds: if you want tabs, you’ve got them. If you want to see specific data all on one page, you’ve got that too.

The feature is called MyWhois, and it lets you customize a single page view. This is better than the old one page view, because MyWhois lets you select only the data you want to appear. (Of course, if you want all the data you can just select everything). You can even select the order the data are shown.

You can default to MyWhois as long as you are logged into your DomainTools account, regardless of how you arrived at the site.

$66,001 e.Biz Sale Closes

.biz takes the top spot for the week…sort of.

“The top sale at Sedo this past week was a .biz domain name.”

I never thought I’d have the chance to write that. And I’m not being entirely truthful by writing it. The $66,001 sale of e.Biz claims the highest “number” for the week, but when you convert the 49,000 EUR sale of i.de to U.S. dollars, .de claims the top spot.

But let’s not ruin the moment.

We still don’t know who the buyer of e.biz is because it hasn’t been transferred from the registry to the buyer. But that should happen shortly. Other .biz domain transactions finalized this week include d.biz ($26,110), w.biz ($13,500), u.biz ($10,099), and z.biz ($8,988).
