573,000 credit and debit accounts compromised.
Network Solutions’ web servers have been hacked, resulting in 573,000 compromised credit and debit accounts, writes Brian Krebs of Washington Post.
The exposed data isn’t that of domain registration customers, but instead financial accounts of people who purchased something from a web site hosted with Network Solutions e-commerce package. In other words, it’s mostly customers of mom-and-pop stores on the web.
Network Solutions has offered to contact customers of each store on their behalf.
Since security is the number one priority of any e-commerce offering, this is sure to be a major blow to the domain registrar and hosting company. However, it’s likely more painful to the small online businesses who may have lost the trust of their customers.

Yeah…..that’s really bad for the image of shopping on the Net.
Imagine a bunch of those attacks at once stacking up high. Bam……there goes a percentage of customers limiting or stopping credit card orders.
It makes you wonder if one day there might be the death penalty or life in prison for hacking since so many peoples lives are affected.

As this is the kind of “mistake” which could cost these 1,000+ small/er entities their actual companies, a class-action filing is well justified…
…as would be their immediate moving of their sites to other hosts.
Shameful.

Everybody is getting hacked! from twitter to facebook to webmasterworld forum…
nobody is safe.
As long as your on the Internet, someday somehow, you will get hacked!
Johnny says
They may begin to label hackers as terrorists.
They already did to some gangs in the U.S. The Crips and Bloods are now on the list of terrorist organizations.
Frank says
They actually are giving themselves a pat on the back for using social media to discuss this. Check out the company blog. What nerve.

Hi Andrew, I work for Network Solutions and want to re-assure all our customers and small business owners we are working in their best interest. We are doing everything we can do to minimize the impact on them. We have set up an online feedback forum providing frequent updates at http://www.careandprotect.com
Steve M says
Gee, Miguel.
How nice of you all to be “doing everything we can to minimize the impact on them.”
How about doing everything you can to prevent this kind of terrible thing from happening in the first place?
