Article says domain name auction yesterday would have been “one of the first”.
A planned real estate domain name auction yesterday in San Francisco fizzled as no one placed bids. But an article in the San Francisco Chronicle about the auction will give you a chuckle. It suggests that this would have been “one of the first” live domain auctions:
The few who showed up felt more comfortable negotiating in private – removing the sale from public view and scuttling what would have been one of the first – and probably classiest – live auctions of domain names in the history of the Internet.
Classiest, perhaps. But one of the first? The author needs to do a little fact checking.
By the way, the next live domain name auction will take place in Washington D.C. on Tuesday afternoon.

Also read the comments left by the readers of
“San Francisco Chronicle” and their feeling towards domainers……not many positive comments.

I agree, Paul.
The comments are a prime example of what I’ve always believed – that most people are stuck in a time warp when it comes to domainers. I haven’t seen the word cybersquatters used so many times since 1999.

Funny that the reporter couldn’t find out how many domain auctions there are every year. A little google search would have helped?
How did she find Adam Dicker and why was he listed as a godaddy VP? I thought he moved on from that position.

I’m amazed how much the media has degraded over the last decade — with sloppy reporting like this, it’s no wonder they’re all going broke. I was a bit surprised by how angry some of the commenters seemed to be that people register more than one domain.. I did a Google search on the matter and apparently some people even refer to domainers as “Domain Nazis” — that’s nice 🙁

This is why so many Newspapers are failing!
They talk so much Crap!
I struggle to find an article in a paper that is true anymore!
Sad world we are living in now that we need to do the homework ourselves to find out the truth about anything Im just glad we have the internet!

Rob

Dont see how this even made it into the sfgate to begin with, the auction did not work, the domains likely will be sold for less than reg fee as there is minimal value there and developing out 2500 sites is pure lunacy in that vertical..

Well…..there is an video today on CNN about how a dog ate a bag of pot and got high.

This is the new “news”. It’s sad a lot of the younger generation does not understand that news today really is not real news anymore.
This kind of stuff does not surprise my any more, it just scares me. This is where we are heading.

Yes, but will it be “classy”? 🙂

the article – and comments – at sfgate has to be one of the most ignorant I’ve ever read. this is how they research the world, and most of it has probably been wrong or void of fact-checking or insight.
The nyt should hire someone like frank or andrew to cover the domain beat.
