Telnic reports 200,000 registrations for .tel domain name.
Telnic, the operator of the .tel domain name, today announced that it has over 200,000 domain names registered. The company reported 100,000 .tel domains were registered a day after general registration became available in March. (Domains were available at higher prices prior to the general launch).
Some of the growth is likely coming from Telnic’s distribution agreements with directory providers in Europe and MySpace. Registration breakdowns by registrar are available through ICANN but are delayed three months, so it’s impossible to tell who the biggest .tel registrars are at this point. (MySpace and the directories are resellers, though, and probably won’t show up in Telnic’s reports.)
.Tel domain names can’t be hosted or parked. They serve like a yellow pages listing for a business or person. For an example, visit allemann.tel.

The “reach” advantage over .com and the other dots, is a killer app all itself. Keeping in mind the WWW is one part of the much larger Internet (remember Prodigy and AOL BlackBird?), the exponential increase in a single, simple platform is truly cool.
Extending One’s contact information and providing communicative e channels for connecting will drive the “value” for business.
As for catching on, that will be about KISS (keep it simple stupid) and so far so good. Mom and Pop Internet need to “get it”. Speed of page load is a start, use on mobile is another (text is much easier on the eyes) and integration.
Myself, I’d like to see more deals with perhaps Facebook, Twitter, Google, Firefox, Explorer etc.. where it’s not just reselling but deeper, integration including dedicated search boxes/features, browser add-ons, real-time information feeds (RSS for .Tel), and the like
Long way to go, not going to happen overnight, and I think, best yet to come.

Very interesting to see such growth in a short space of time. I’ve personally only purchased a handful but now wished I had more as seeing new services with the promise of making me some money cropping up for .tel everyday. http://www.Telpages.com (tbd) and jeepa.com for search feature and http://www.dottelads.com for adding your listings on a global advertising exchange! Keep it coming…

Sam, just a quick correction if I may – it’s http://www.jepaa.com, just in case people are looking for it. A search engine for a single TLD is indeed unique and will provide people with an understanding that a .tel means contact information only.
As mentioned, we’ve got more in the pipeline regarding simple but powerful functionality but I’d like to take a second to thank the community for taking our APIs and the inspiration to develop such cool tools so early on in the .tel’s lifetime – it’s difficult to even consider that they only started resolving on March 13th (which happened to be the 20th anniversary of the World Wide Web).
Thanks Andrew for keeping us focused also – we know the job we need to do and it’s good to have the scrutiny of the media 🙂
Regards,
Justin

What I know is that all premium domains are now registered but it still have over 7000 LLL.tel available and could interest many companies as soon as they will heard about .tel so marketing and advertising is important and we dodn’t even see Telnic advertising in Media but just press release and domainers community to make these 200000 reg in 2 month. It could be bigger if many registrars offer to sell .tel and also at a lower reg fee price.

If you read BusinessWeek this week, traditional advertising outlets are no longer the obvious choice when targeting audiences, with other, online forms being just as good without the wastage. Our viral movie has been seeded to many online sites and has achieved a strong number of views. You will start seeing us ramp up our marketing activity, from next week in fact, but we are following a sustained approach that aims to meet Andrew’s points above, not make a fast buck and fold. We’re in a brave new world

I can say I’m enjoying developing my .Tel’s. My latest purchase is Scrappage.Tel , I feel quite lucky to get this one. The UK Govt just launched a Scrappage Scheme for cars over 10 yrs old to be scrapped for a new one with participating dealers. All UK papers are now carrying scrappage ads from big auto dealers.
I’ve launched scrappage.tel as a car dealer directory to find all the scrappage deals in one place and simply aim to charge dealers for a monthly listing fee. Oh!…the United States is also in the process of approving it’s own scrappage scheme anytime soon, and projected to scrap over 1 million cars.
What I find facinating about .tel, is you can launch a targeted directory pretty much on the fly! The rest is simply down to a little marketing creativity to get the business.
So far so good and we’ll see how this baby goes over the coming weeks and months. Well done .TEL!
