How to Get Press for Your Domain Name Business

How to get press on domain name news sites and blogs.

I’ve been meaning to write this article for a long time. The question is “how can I get press for my domain industry product/conference/auction/sale?”

I get a handful of press releases and pitches every day from people wanting me to mention or review their product, promote an upcoming auction, or do a profile. I can’t do them all, but here are my suggestions for increasing the likelihood of getting through.

1. Know your author. Every domain news site and blog writes different types of articles. Try to customize your pitch to the site based on types of stories that have been written before. “I notice you’ve written about product XYZ in the past. We’re releasing a new product that’s better than XYZ because…”

2. Don’t just send a press release; add color. And especially don’t write “please publish on your site”. Anyone who reads Domain Name Wire knows I don’t re-publish press releases. I may write a story about the product or launch, but won’t just republish it.

3. Give an exclusive. I’ve received pitches before that are worth writing about, but then I notice that five other domain sites have already written about it. I don’t want to be last on a story. Domain Name Wire is not an echo chamber. Either give it to me first (or anyone else for that matter) or give me an interesting angle on it.

4. Establish rapport. This is especially important if you want to get press over an extended period of time, such as for conferences.

Also understand that sometimes good pitches get overlooked or there isn’t enough time to write all of them.
