Recent sales at Sedo show scarcity is less important than potential use.
Domain names aren’t like baseball cards. Just because something is scarce doesn’t mean it’s more valuable.
This week’s completed sales of three letter domain names at Sedo show weakness in low quality three letter domain names:
MWX.com $4,000
FGZ.com $4,000
VZJ.com $3,499
JQF.com $3,333
This parallels a fad in the domain market during 2008. Because all four character .com domain names were registered, people assumed that they had value. Even if they were filled with x, z, and q. Just because they’re all taken and “rare” doesn’t mean they’re valuable. Unless the domain can eventually be used for a logically associated web site, there’s little value in these names.
Here’s a look at other (mostly non-three letter) domain name sales completed at Sedo over the past week:

Except you didn’t mention that 3 of four were part of bulk sales. While reseller prices are down, end-user prices are not.
Steve M says
The lower prices for “less desirable” LLLs such as these does, however, provide a nice counter-intuitive opportunity…for brand new entities who choose to name their company, business, blog, website, etc to match them, i.e. MWX for a new company named, “MidWay X,” JQF for “John Q Fun,” etc.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Rob – what do you mean by “bulk sales”? Most were part of Great Domains auction.
