A look back at the previous month in domain names.
2009 started with a bang in the domain name industry. Here’s a look at the top five new articles (by views) on Domain Name Wire:
1. GoDaddy Takes on eBay, Amazon.com, and Yahoo – in a rather perplexing and unexpected move, GoDaddy launched an online marketplace for people to sell physical goods.
2. Mystery Domain Auction Isn’t About Domain Names – was that really just last month? I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of variation on this idea pop up again.
3. Go Daddy Thwarts Cyber Criminal, 1,000 Accounts Locked – Domain Name Wire broke the news that user information in 1,000 GoDaddy accounts was compromised. Fortunately, GoDaddy proactively spotted the problem and fixed the vulnerability.
4. Register.com’s Customer Service Lie – the comments got a bit out of hand on this article about Register.com’s practice of requiring customers to call in to get transfer authorization codes. It didn’t help when a Register.com employee posted a comment pretending to be just a customer.
5. Oversee.net Lays Off 18% of Staff – Oversee.net laid off another 18% as it prepared for a “very difficult economic environment in 2009″. Expect similar announcements from the company’s competitors this year.
