Registrar for Frank Schilling’s Name Administration empire changes name.
I was always a bit confused about the name of Frank Schilling’s domain registrar, Domain Name Sales Corp. Schilling would lament on his blog about how many purchase inquiries he received, when he generally did not sell domains. Well, if I saw a domain name registered at “Domain Name Sales Corp”, I would think it was for sale.
An astute reader noticed that the name of the registrar has changed from Domain Name Sales Corp to iRegistry. This appears to now be reflected in the whois records of domains owned by Schilling’s company Name Administration.
In addition to consumer confusion over the name, there’s another reason I think this move was smart. Lawyers look for any angle possible to prove that you registered a domain in bad faith. By pointing to the name of the registrar as “Domain Name Sales Corp”, a lawyer could suggest that the domain was registered purely for the intent of resale.

I wish he would open up for transfers and registrations…I’d be there quick.

The really kinda surprising thing is that it took so long to make that change! (unless…)

Good catch and good point.
I wish Frank would post to his blog but probably more of a thankless hassle than any benefit for him.

Nothing wrong with registering a domain as a “pure investment”. As long as no TM’s or copyrights are at issue.
Next thing you know…you won’t be able to name your dog “Danno”(with out domain ext…LOL)….because the guy on “Hawaii Five O….will sue you or the producers of the show.
Peace!

BTW: Frank…that won’t let ” Seven Mile rehab”…until you start posting again….they say I am incurable until then…LOL (really NOT lol). Blog baby blog!
Peace!

… agree that the name change will help Frank with potential buyers & attorneys … further suggesting that a registry name like “NoSales” or “NeverSales” could prove worthwhile.

I can’t speak for Frank Schilling but I’m positive
Frank has NO interest in allowing others use his registrar.
His is the classic example of a “private registrar”.
You will see more and more of those in the future.
Why would he want to allow others into his registrar?
He doesn’t need your domain if you don’t renew it.
He doesn’t need the few pennies gross profit from registering and renewing domains for others.
He doesn’t need the extra, trival work.
Nor, the need to hire more people to manage the domains and handle communications.
At this point, there is NO WAY a domain could be hi-jacked out of his registrar without his authorization.
Domains are totally locked down from transfers out.
The prevention of one hi-jacking pays for itself.
That is why you are seeing more domainers leasing or buying registrars for their personal use.
Steve M says
Hmmmm … when one owns their own registrar (or leases one with “full & complete” control), how can such an owner be forced to hand over one of their own domains as the result of a WIPO/ UDRP decision … if they don’t really want to?

>>Frank has NO interest in allowing others use his registrar.<<
Yeah, we know that.
Andrew says
@ Steve M – because if you don’t hand it over then your registar will lose its accreditation from ICANN.

A smart move, as I would expect from Frank. You can learn alot from watching smart domainers like Frank.

Speaking of which, chillibeans.com is still with Frank. I guess he filed suit for it already?

Good!!! Nice to hear Dave.
The term is as “Generic” as they come. No matter what the “complainant” has to say. IMHO.
Peace!

AKA “Danno” on Franks Blog…’
If Frank ever gets the ‘fire’ and ‘time’ to start it back up…which I think we all can agree was a great blog and lots of fun….with great posts and comments.
My “Seven Mile Rehab”…is not going so well…its been months and I am still going through “withdrawal symptoms”…LOL
BTW: nice site here at Domain Name Wire also. Great info…and is always one of the first out with ‘new’ domain news and storys.
Well done!
