Also i like to add that ICANN recently release a document that states

"Multiple applications for the same city name will require applicants to resolve
the contention among themselves (as with existing practice regarding
contested country code TLDs)."

just thought i should share :D

There has been arguments over geo TLD based and ICANN is making it more difficult for gTLD applicant who wishes to apply geo TLD(s).

If anything, this will eventually enhance the value of dotCom because it will solidify its status as the default TLD when people try to remember an address out of a million different TLDs.

However, I can also see this wreaking confusion with ccTLDs. Take Germany for example. Will it be dotDE? dotGermany? dotDeutschland? dotGermania?

Or will the countries pull rank with ICANN and not allow it?

.Com is king, and will reign forever.

New TLDs will definitely change the domain industry, but I can't foresee any major impact on the domain aftermarket.

The popular TLDs such as .com and .net will hold their ground. Any new TLD will mostly be taken up by end-users, rather than domainers registering in bulk and hoarding them.

Also, domain registrars may be selective in which TLD they choose to offer for sale, making it even harder to register some of the new TLDs.

One opportunity that crossed my mind lately is that perhaps a new tld will rise that is based offshore with the premise that it is a safe tld. This way you won't have to worry about the Steve Beshears of the world, at the registrar level, or the registry level. Then you could register BetFromKentucky.tld
