Looks like a fun and challenging gig if you don’t mind moving to Toronto. The position reports to Bill Sweetman, who is GM for the domain portfolio. I’ve talked with Sweetman on the phone while writing a story in the past, and he seems to really enjoy his gig.
More details are available here.
I’ve been considering adding a job board to Domain Name Wire. Is that something readers (and employers) would be interested in?
Elliot Silver says
I think more domain companies should consider hiring domainers. I suppose it’s difficult though because there isn’t much incentive for most successful domainers to leave the confines of their own businesses/schedules to work for someone else.
Bill Sweetman says
Thanks for helping us recruit for this cool position, Andrew! I truly believe this is an amazing opportunity for a budding or ‘hobby’ domainer who wants to work (and learn) in this space full-time. A great ‘ground floor’ opportunity, as they say.

Sounds fun, but they left out the important part…. The Pay! If this is a 6 figure position, I might be interested. 🙂

Hi Bill,
I would be interested in discussing the opportunity with you in more detail. Please email me the best way to reach you by phone. I have a few additional ideas to help this revenue channel grow for Tucows and show increased shareholder value. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Steven

Thanks for your interest in this position. I must respectfully ask you to please follow the application process outlined on the page that is linked to from Andrew’s post (see: “More details are available *here*.”).
Thanks again.

Sounds like a fun position. But I wonder how does one separate business/work and personal when you are also a domainer yourself. Would there be a big conflict of interest? Must read the hiring contract very carefully if you are hired for this position.
Rob Sequin says
Bill,
I’m not sure you would want a “budding or ‘hobby’ domainer” for this position unless you are really looking for a database guy who happens to have domains.
To really understand, test and optimize PPC you have to live and breath it.
Sounds like you need a database guy, a sales guy and a domainer all in one.
But, I don’t mean to tell you your job.
I just wanted to say that I’m glad that you are reaching out to domainers. More domain portfolio companies should hire domain experts to manage and optimize revenue whether it be from PPC, direct advertisers, leasing or sales. Domainers can also help with usability.
I’ve seen WAY too many companies in this business run by the tech guys building features and making the site more complex with (assumed) little or no input from the end user, the domainer.
Good luck.

Yes I believe domainers are sitting on a lot of useful knowledge. Eg. WE know how to analyze internet search, search behavior, internet trends, optimize keywords – PPC etc.

Nice post but when it comes to domain names I do not get it why would someone as a domain name owner work for someone else.
Why be the servent to another king when you can serve yourself and be the King and build your OWN kingdom.
Antoinette says
Maybe because of the steady paycheck. So far, for me, the money flow has not been steady. If you have financial obligations to meet (i.e. a family to provide for!), the security of a job can outweigh the potential profits you might receive from being self-employed.

Elliot many domain oriented companies have engaged in recruiting domainers. As you point out though, hiring someone who can pull in a bigger salary working in their underwear isn’t easy.
Damir, Adam Dicker works for Godaddy. Brian Null used to work with Geosign. Ask them why they’d do it
