Afternic problem doesn’t affect Firefox, should be fixed soon.
After a few days of not being able to access Afternic.com, I went straight to the source for an explanation. Adam Gross, Director of Product Management, Domain Marketplace for NameMedia, Inc., says there’s a cookie problem on the Afternic.com site. This only affects users of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. They’re working on the problem and should have it fixed soon. In the meantime, use Firefox to access the site. There are a couple good names on the “closing soon” list as you’re reading this, including iFlu.com.
Gross also told me about Afternic’s new blog, AfternicDLS Blog. The blog covers Afternic news as well as general domain name information. It looks like the blog is getting more active this month.
Afternic isn’t the only site to run into a slight hiccup this week. Imagine my surprise to find a parking page when I visited popular forum DNForum over the weekend. Here’s what I saw:
Perhaps I should have clicked on the “dnforum.com may be for sale!” link and made an offer. Perhaps a couple million bucks would suffice? Well, with the Canadian dollar on par with the U.S. dollar I don’t think forum owner Adam Dicker would go for that.
The whois record for the site pointed to SmartName’s parking service. Dicker didn’t respond to my message about what happened, but I suspect DNForum was doing a site update and perhaps switched the DNS to a parked page during the update. It was Saturday morning…perhaps that’s a slow time for domaining.
