Fabulous will list its domain name portfolio on BuyDomains, Afternic.
At first glance, NameMedia and Fabulous seem like competitors. Both NameMedia’s BuyDomains and Fabulous offer a huge portfolio of premium domains for sale. But the two companies have inked an agreement to list Fabulous’ domain portfolio on both BuyDomains and Afternic (the latter was recently acquired by NameMedia).
This makes sense. Premium domain names don’t really compete with each other for sales. Sure, if someone is looking for blog related domains they might choose amongst a handful of good domains that are owned by different parties. But if someone wants a particular premium domain, they can only buy it from one person. By listing Fabulous’ domains on BuyDomains, BuyDomains sales reps can offer a greater selection to customers. Fabulous will benefit from BuyDomains’ US sales presence.
This is great for Afternic as well, which will see its inventory explode. Between BuyDomains’
and Fabulous alone the site will have over 1 million listings. This should help it compete with Sedo. Sedo and Afternic both court domain registrars to supplement domain searches with their aftermarket listings. Sedo sometimes wins based on the number of domain listings on its site (over 5 million). In fact, Sedo recently grabbed Dotster’s business from Afternic. The new listings should help Afternic compete for these registrar agreements.
NameMedia, owners of BuyDomains, currently has a portfolio of 800,000 domains. Fabulous has over 500,000 domain names.
