After doing more research, it is clear that Google’s “animated banner ad” announcement today is a HUGE deal. It’s not the animated banners that matter. It’s that now you can target ANY TYPE OF AD by site rather than by keyword. Site-targetted ads will be sold on a cost per thousand basis only. How this will impact Adsense earnings is unclear. But if people start targetting ads by site rather than keyword, smaller publishers could take a huge hit. Also, Google will introduce “expanded text ads” that take up an entire ad block. These will be the same text ads but with a larger font and will be sold on a CPM basis.
Site targetting is similar to BidVertiser.com, except that BidVertiser is still a cost per click network.
Site targetting is in beta with only a few advertisers right now.
